We learn more about the features of Earth - Part 13 Gas - Information for kids

in #steemiteducation6 years ago

In most of our houses we use electricity for the stove and the fridge, but in some houses they work with gas.  You turn open the gas and light it and then use it for cooking or your fridge.

We are also dependent on a gas called Oxygen and the atmosphere is made up of different gasses.  Lets learn more.

Everything we see around us is made up of 'matter' and this matter can be in one of three stages.  It can either be a solid like ice or a table, a liquid like water or milk or a gas like steam or oxygen.

A pure gas is made up of only one atom, like for instance Neon is an example of a pure gas (no other atoms are found in it.)  We also get gases that are made up of 2 of the same atoms, like hydrogen has two hydrogen molecules and is called elemental gas.

A compound gas forms when the gas is made up of 2 or more different atoms like for instance carbon dioxide is made up of a carbon and two oxygen atoms.

The air we breathe here on Earth is made up of different gases. It contains around 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% argon and a small amount of other gases.

We can measure the pressure of gasses in Pascal.

There are many types of gases and they have specific uses.  Lets look at a few.

  • Helium is a gas that we can put in balloons to make them float.  The helium is lighter than the air around it, so the balloon will float.  If you inhale helium, you will speak in a funny high voice.
  • Ozone is made up of three oxygen molecules and that is the protective layer that protects Earth from the harmful rays of the Sun.
  • Nitrous oxide is a gas that can be used in a hospital as 'laughing gas' which is an anesthetic or it can be used to increase the energy in a car engine and make it faster during a race.
  • The natural gas that is formed underneath the crust of the Earth, mostly contains Methane and this can be used for cooking and heating/cooling appliances.

  1. How did the natural gas form?
  2. Where will you find natural gas?
  3. What is the rock called that traps the gas?
  4. What is the difference between 'dry' and 'wet' gas?
  5. How do the people extract the gas?
  6. What else can you find in the same area as the gas?
  7. Name a few uses of natural gas.
