We learn more about the features of Earth - Part 14 Geysers - Information and questions for kids

When you see the word 'geyser', your first thought will be that they are reading about the geyser in your house that heats up the water.

Today we will learn about a 'natural geyser', where water and steam gets ejected out from under a rock up into the air.  It is also pronounced a bit different.  You can listen two the two ways to pronounce it here.

A geyser is a spring from which water and steam is ejected forcefully into the air at heights ranging from less than a metre (a few feet) to over one hundred metres (several hundred feet).

Watch the video and listen carefully to learn more and answer the questions.

  1. What comes out if a geyser erupts?
  2. What is 'Old Faithful' and where will you find it.  Why is this a special geyser?
  3. Is the water from a geyser hot?  Why is that?
  4. What is Magma?
  5. What is the difference between boiling water and cold water?
  6. How often does Old Faithful erupt?``

Geysers are rare and is a phenomenon which is not seen everywhere, because in order for a geyser to be created it needs exact and special conditions.

It needs three specific things.  Heat, water and cracks in the rocks for the water to come out through.

We get two types of geysers on Earth - a cone geyser and a fountain geyser.  The fountain geyser erupts with violent force while the cone geyser is just a steady, calm eruption.

Because it takes special circumstances for a geyser to form, it will also stop erupting if anything changes occur and it will become dormant.  A lot of times people causes this for throwing litter and debris down the hole.  It can also stop because there is a mineral build up or an earthquake changes the 'plumbing system' underneath the ground.

The world's tallest active geyser is found in Yellowstone. Steamboat Geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin can erupt to a height exceeding 116 m (380 ft). Yellowstone is also home to the world-renowned Old Faithful Geyser.

In Iceland you will find many geysers and hot springs which people also use for recreational purposes.
