When feeling sad is more than just a feeling - Suffering from depression - Information for teenagers

Yesterday we looked at the fact that your emotions can be up and down and some days you will feel sad and happy all in one day (being a teenager can sometimes be very confusing), but we also said that if you feel sad the whole time, there can be a chance that you suffer from 'depression'.  Lets get some extra information on this.


We may feel sad over an argument with a friend, a breakup, or a best friend moving out of town. We might be disappointed about doing poorly on a test or discouraged if our team can't break its losing streak. The death of someone close can lead to a specific kind of sadness — grief. 

Feeling certain emotions when thing happen in your life is normal, but we learn to deal with it and eventually move on and start feeling better, but if you are suffering from depression you have a constant feeling of sadness, that you are useless, that you do not belong anywhere, have a problem with your self image,  are not in the mood to do anything and can feel very alone.

Depression affects more than a person's mood. It affects thinking, too. It interferes with the ability to notice or enjoy the good things in life. Depression drains the energy, motivation, and concentration a person needs for normal activities.  

There can be a few thing that you will notice that can be an indication that you may suffer from depression (just feeling down sometimes is not a sign), these are feelings that do not just clear up and you feel better.


There are so many teenagers that do not realize that they are depressed. They will either think that it is 'normal' and everybody goes through it or they will be hard on themselves and the worse they feel, the more they will find fault and beat down on themselves.  

You can become your worst enemy and start believing that there is nothing good about life or yourself.

Some people with depression can have more problems that just dealing with depression. They can start hurting themselves or even have some eating disorder which will also harm their health.

Very important to remember is that you need to see a professional if you suspect that you may suffer from depression. Do not 'self diagnose' and just start drinking random medication to make yourself feel better. 

The chances are that they will only work for a while and you can even become and addict.


You need to see a psychiatrist or doctor who can speak to you, have knowledge about this and prescribe medication that can help you, or help you with talking about your feelings.

Do not keep quiet, because you believe you are crazy or do not deserve to be helped, because you are a 'bad' person.  Nobody deserves to feel this way and there is help.

If you do not get help, you can spiral out of control and hurt yourself or others.  You can spend the rest of your life feeling sad and useless.... do not do this to yourself. 

 GET HELP.

Depression can get better with the right attention and care — sometimes more easily than a person thinks. But if it's not treated, things can stay bad or get worse. That's why people who are depressed shouldn't wait and hope it will go away on its own 

Do not become one of the statistics of teenagers who did not get help, because they did not know or they were too proud or scared....


You are worth so much more than to suffer through life with feeling sad and useless the whole time.

And the sooner the person gets help, the sooner they will get better. I recently lost a young friend to suicide; a young lady who was being treated by medical professionals but she sadly did not get enough family support, so it's vital that they use all the support systems available. Such a horrid condition, you are right, no one deserves to feel this way and suffer in silence, depression can be a terminal condition if not treated. Thank you for this post!

It is so sad - and this is a huge problem among teenagers - some people just make it off at 'being full of nonsense'
