Life is not always 'smooth sailing'.  There are good days and bad days.  Ups and down.  Sometimes it really feels like you are on a roller coaster.  All these different events, especially the bad ones, can make us anxious and afraid and we can suffer from anxiety,

You can try and keep yourself calm and your mind busy, but if nothing helps and you cannot calm yourself down by doing certain things, you will have to go and see a professional or get a prescription from your doctor.

People can suffer from different types of anxiety.

'Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)' - this anxiety causes you to struggle to do your daily tasks.  It is difficult to get out of bed and go to school and be around people.

It happens a lot of times when you are among people or even by yourself that something triggers an anxiety attack.  This is not something that you think about, it just happens.  Your breathing starts becoming shallow and your heart beats faster.  You start sweaty and feeling more panicked.  Some people even feel that they are having a heart attack.  These attacks can last from seconds to a few minutes.

If this happens you need to try and calm yourself down.  Go lie on the bed and close your eyes and breath slowly in and out.  If you are with other people, watch your breathing and try and focus on one person or thing.  The more you work yourself up, the worse it will get.

Some people also have phobias, which means that you have a certain fear of something specific.  This is not always a fear of something that makes sense like the fear of heights or the dark or spiders.  It can even be the fear of paper on the ground or cracks in the cement.  Even if you may think it is silly, these fears are very real to the people that suffers from it.

Sometimes we have to leave our friends or family behind when we leave on a trip or camp.  Feeling a little scared of the unknown is normal, but some people get very anxious and they do not want to leave.  This we call 'separation anxiety.'  This can also make it difficult for you to make friends, because you will have a fear that you will have to visit them and be away from your house.

People that struggle with leaving their houses and interacting with others may have 'social anxiety'.  You are scared of how people will treat you and what they will think of you and you are scared that you will make a fool of yourself by saying the wrong things, therefore you rather avoid any interactions.

The mind is a powerful thing and we must we aware not to obsess over things.  'Obsessing' means that you are constantly thinking about things and in your mind it gets worse and worse.  The more you dwell on these feelings, the worse you will feel and maybe get a panic attack.

If you feel anxious you need to try and calm yourself down.  You can write down your feeling, partly to get it out there and partly to keep your mind busy with something else than concentrating on how you feel.

Try and look at the positive side of things.  The more you dwell on the negative, the more anxious you will become.

Make sure that you concentrate on the present and not keep thinking about the 'what if...'
