Writing your own newspaper article - Exercise for Gr 6-7

in #steemiteducation5 years ago (edited)

A journalist's job is to report on a specific piece of news or event.  As a journalist you must stay objective - this means you must not write only the one side of the story or get emotionally involved.  You can also get information from other people and you can quote them directly.

Start your story off with a catchy heading and make sure you write your name under it so that people will know who the author is.  If you have taken photographs, they need captions - one sentence telling you more about the photo.

Read the following article and then write your own on a topic of your choice

Grey headed armed 'hijacker' does not go to jail

Anneke

In Eland Road in Cape Town lives a 72 year old granny, scared of nothing.

Mrs Bessie Mader chased away 3 'robbers' that were trying to steal her car yesterday at the West Side Mall.

We spoke to Mrs Bessie and she told us her story.  She says she does not like any type of bragging and is also a little embareassed about the story but she agreed to speak to The Citizen.

According to her she has been firing guns for as long as she can remember.  She was never afraid of it and her dad and then later her late husband would take her to the shooting range.  She even got her Provincial colours when she was a young girl.

The whole story starts when Granny Bes (as all the people call her) went to the shop.  She was not there for long, but when she came back to her car, she saw three men getting into her car.

"I love that car and it is the only one I have, so I decided to do something about it," she told us.

She quietly went up to the car and took out her .38 special and pointed it at the three suspects while shouting "Get out, get out, or I'll shoot".

The men were so suprized and in shock, they only sat there for a while and then jumped out of the car as quick as they could and ran away.

Granny Bes tried to start the car but to no avail.   She was shaken up from the whole incident and first had to calm herself.  After the third try she started looking around in the car and to her shock she realized she was in the wrong car.

Granny Bes chuckles and blushes while she tells the story.  "I really felt so bad for those men I gave such a fright."

She decided to go to the security office and inform them of what has happened.  When she got there she saw the 3 men, telling the guards they were hijacked by an old lady.

"Nobody believed them, until I showed up", Granny Bes laughs.

"Luckily for me the young men forgave me  when I explained they drive the exact car as mine.  We had a good laugh, and I even took them out for lunch."

"I am just very glad I did not have to sleep in jail", Granny Bes says with a smile.
