Do not take your sight for granted

We tend to spend a lot of time looking after our skin, teeth and hair, but looking after our eyes are not always high on our list.

Just think about how it will be if you cannot see?  How much you will miss out on, and I am not talking about being blind, I am talking about not having 'perfect' vision and going through life with everything being a blur.

Writing things down from the board, just to read it afterwards, seeing that it makes no sense.  Not seeing your friend waving at you from the other side of the road...

A lot of teenagers neglect having their eyes tested, even if they know they will maybe need glasses, because they do not want to wear glasses.  Luckily there are contact lenses and your life will be so much better if you can see what is going on around you.

It is important that our eyes are tested at least once every two years, to pick up if our eyes have deteriorated and it is also a good thing to determine the health of our eyes.

There are a number of ways in which you can tell the you may have some problems with your eyes.

You have to blink a few times in order to let your eyes focus and see clearly.  You will also notice that you rub your eyes more and if you want to read or see an object clearly you have to hold it close to your face.

If you are in class you will have to look on the black board and write down the words.  It may sometimes appear that the words are 'swimming' around on the board.  Watching TV or playing computer games are also getting more difficult and you struggle to focus or you tend to miss some writing.

You can also struggle with constant head aches and your eyes feel strained and like something is pulling on it.

These are all signs that it is a good idea to have your eyes tested, but what can you expect from an eye test?

First of all it is nothing to be afraid of, it does not hurt in any way.  After the test the doctor will determine if you need to wear glasses or contact lenses permanently or just for driving and reading.

Optometry is a health care profession which involves examining the eyes and applicable visual systems for defects or abnormalities as well as the medical diagnosis and management of eye disease. Traditionally, the field of optometry began with the primary focus of correcting refractive error through the use of spectacles. Modern day optometry, however, has evolved through time so that the education curriculum additionally includes intensive medical training in the diagnosis and management of ocular disease in countries where the profession is established and regulated.Optometrists (also known as Doctors of Optometry in the US and Canada for those holding the O.D. degree or Ophthalmic Opticians in the UK) are medical professionals who provide primary eye care through comprehensive eye examinations to detect and treat various visual abnormalities and eye diseases

The optometrist will do a few tests to determine the health of your eyes as well as the weakness or strength.  If he picks up something medically wrong, you will have to be referred to a specialist, otherwise he will just prescribe a certain strength lenses to help you see better.

It is better to get your eyes tested and get glasses or contact lenses to help you see clearer than to go through life in a 'daze' or everything looking 'fuzzy'.  If you have any of the symptoms that makes you suspect that your eyes are weak, have the test done.

It is a few minutes out of your day, but the results when you get your glasses or contact lenses are worth every minute.

For interest sake have a look at how contact lenses are manufactured.
