Earth and its build - Geography lesson for kids
If you could take Earth and cut a piece out of it so you can have a look at the inside, you will make a wonderful discovery - Earth is made up of different layers.
On the outside we have the crust, then underneath it there is a layer called the mantle and then we get the outer core and the inner core in the middle of earth.
The inner core is the hottest part of earth and here you will find iron and nickel. The outer core is not solid rock, but a liquid and is is about 2000 km thick.
The mantle and made up of pieces of rock - some are solids and some are liquid. so we call it 'semi-molten'.

The crust is the part that we can see and that we live on - It has different features like the sea and mountains and flat areas. The part where you find the sea is called the 'oceanic crust' and the rocky parts are called the 'continental crust'.
The crust is thicker at some places that others, but still much thinner than the other layers. It is between 5 and 70 km thick.
The whole of the crust consist of plates (different pieces) that are called 'tectonic plates' and they fit next to each other and are moving the whole time. Sometimes these plates bump against each other and then earthquakes happen or they 'squeeze' against each other and mountains and volcanoes form.

Activity
You are going to build a model of Earth - You can either show the different layers of earth or you can make a model showing the different ways in which the plates move and what landforms it can cause.
Make sure that you do not only label the parts of your model, but also add extra information on it so that the other kids can learn more if they look at the model.
You can use any material you want and if you prefer rather making a poster you can do that.
Use your imagination and decide on how you want to do this. For some inspiration you can watch the video.
