Well known structures - Part 6 Eiffel Tower - Information for kids
What is the first thing you think about if you think of Paris, France? Most probably the Eiffel Tower. An impressive structure recognized all over the world. Lets gather some facts on it.
Located on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France, the Eiffel Tower is one of the most well known structures in the world.
In 1889 this structure was build to serve as the entrance to the world's fair. The company's owner in charge of the project was named Gustav Eiffel and that is how the Eiffel tower got its name.
The Eiffel tower is 320 meters high and for more than 40 years it was the tallest man made structure in the world before higher buildings were built.
Lets have a look at a few interesting building facts on this tower
- every 7 years they add about 50 tons of paint to the tower to keep it from rusting
- the tower consists of iron and weights 10 000 ton
- the tower is build to be wind resistant and will move very little in a huge wind storm
- the heat from the Sun has an influence on the steel and the tower is shorter in winter than in summer, since the steel will shrink and expand up to 15 centimeters
There are millions of people that visit this well known land mark and since it has been open to the public, more than 250 million people have climbed up the tower. They can climb the stairs up to the second level, or they can take a lift, which also goes to the third level and higher.
This land mark is recognized by so many and have been used on photographs, planning of other buildings, decorating for parties and many more. You know which land is represented if you see the Eiffel tower.
Being so popular, the Eiffel Tower design has been recreated around the world, including the half scale replica at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel in Nevada, USA and the full scale Tokyo Tower in Japan.
A lot of people did not like the tower when it was first built, but if you like it or not, you will know what it is when you see it.
