I love animals - Information and questions for small kids - Part 6 The Lion

If you love cats, you most probably like all the different species that belongs to the 'cat family'.  Today we will learn about 'The king of the jungle.'..... The lion.

Last we learned that the tiger is the largest of the cat species and the lion is the second largest.  The male lion will weigh about 180kg and the female 130kg, but bigger lions have been recorded.

  • How many of you will make up the weight of a male and a female lion?
  • How much do the male and the female weight together?

A lion can run fast, but different than the Cheetah, they cannot carry on running fast for very far.  It is like they get a 'turbo boost' for a short time in which they can run fast, but then they need to catch their prey, before they run out of stamina.

  • Do you know what is the meaning of 'stamina'?
  • What will a lion chase to try and catch and why does he want to catch this animal?

Most of the lions in the world live in the wild in Southern and Northern Africa and you will hear a lion if it is in the area, because a lion's roar can be heard up to 8 km far.

Different from the other cats like cheetahs and tigers, lions like living together - this is called a pride of lions and you will find males, females and babies (called cubs) in this pride.

They also hunt together, but the female does most of the work to catch the prey.  You would think since they worked so hard to catch the prey, they would be able to eat first, but no, the males eat first, then the females and then the cubs.

It is easy to spot the male lions, because they have a huge mane.

  • What is the 'mane' of a lion?

Lions are the national animal of Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, England, Ethiopia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Singapore.
When lions breed with tigers the resulting hybrids are known as ligers and tigons. There are also lion and leopard hybrids known as leopons and lion and jaguar hybrids known as jaglions.
  • What is a 'hybrid'.
  • Find some pictures of these hybrids.
  • We also find white lions.  Find a video or picture of a white lion.
  • Read more about White Lions here.

The same with a house cat, you will find a lion most of the time resting or sleeping.  They will hunt during the day if necessary, but they prefer moving around at night.  They can spend up to 20 hours per day just lying around.

In the wild a lion can live up to about 12 years, but there are also many lions in captivity that can live longer.  Besides from humans, lions do not have any natural enemies that will hunt them, so they are at the top of the food pyramid and that is maybe why they are called the king of the jungle.

  • Have some fun and make yourself a lion mask.
