It is like you have taken a horse and 'squished' it into a smaller version and whalla, you have a pony.  If you are still small enough, you can ride them the same way you will ride a horse, they can even pull a little cart, but most people just keep them as pets.

A pony's tail and mane (the hair on its neck) is thicker than that of a horse.

If a little child is still learning to ride, it is better to use a pony in the beginning.  If they fall off, it is not as far as what they would fall from a horse's back.

Shetland ponies are strong and if you compare the size and strength to the size and strength of a horse, a pony is actually stronger.

Some people keep miniature horses, which are even smaller than ponies.

What is the difference between Shetland Pony and Miniature Horse? Both these have small bodies, but Shetland ponies could be slightly taller than Miniature horses. ... However, Miniature horses have smooth manes and tails. The coat of the Shetland pony is rough and thick, but the coat of the miniature pony is smooth. 

The type of pony called the Hakney pony, were first breed to pull carts.

It is much easier to look after a pony than a horse.  They are smaller and eat less, but you cannot ride on a pony if you become too big, so it will all depend on why you want a horse or a pony to help you make your choice.
