The boy that cried wolf with an irresponsible prank - A story to read by yourself and answer the questions - English Gr 3-4
It was a Saturday afternoon. Only a few people were working, but the manager of a big company was urgently looking for his best IT guy to get some advice on a computer that crashed.
He was tired and not in a good mood and still had a lot of work to do, so he hoped the problem would be fixed quickly.
He phones Peter's home. Peter is his best IT guy and would be able to help him quickly or come into the office to fix the problem.
The phone rings and rings and then he hears a whisper, "Hello??"
This must be Peter's child that is answering the phone, the manager thinks to himself a little irritated. He does not have the time or energy to first chit chat to a child.
"Hi, may I speak to your dad please?"
There is a hesitation and then the little boy answers softly, "They are busy."
The manager decides to leave a message with the hope that Peter will receive it and he inquires if there are any other adult around that he can speak to.
"Yes, there are a few adults here. My mom, dad, the police officer and the friendly firemen."
The manager is now really worried. What is going on that the police and the fireman are at the house. While he is still wondering about this he hears a loud noise over the phone.
"What is that sound?" he asks with a worried voice.
"That is the helicopter that just landed with the dogs and the search and rescue team", the boy whispers excitedly.
The manager is really worried now and he wants to know who or what they are looking for?
"They are looking for me", the boy whispers back.
Think about the following questions and answer it in full sentences:
- Do you find this story funny and why do you say that?
- What does the expression mean 'to cry wolf'?
- What job does Peter do?
- Do you think what the boy is doing is okay and why do you say that?
- Explain how you think the parents must be feeling.
- Who are all the people looking for the boy?
- Have you ever been lost? Or hid from your parents that they could not find you? Write a paragraph on what happened. (If this has never happened to you, use your imagination and write your own made up story).
- What do you think will happen if they find the boy? How will they feel, will he be in trouble etc.
- Choose the correct Pronoun
- The manager wants to speak to one of his/him IT specialists.
- The computer that crashed belongs to him/his.
- The manager asks if he/him can speak to any other adult.
- You must not make such jokes with you're/your parents.
- The boy says his/he's parents are busy.
- You can also watch the video and learn a lesson from it - playing a prank can be fun, but you must be sure that the prank is not an irresponsible one.
