A long time ago, people did not know about things like germs and because of this, many people get sick and died, but one man made discoveries that helped with that when he discovered things like virus and bacteria and antibiotics. This man was Louis Pasteur.
Pasteur lived from 1822 to 1895 and will be remembered for his work wit prevention of diseases and finding out what caused it.
He is well known for inventing a process to stop food and liquid such as milk from making people sick. This method is called Pasteurization, it helps reduce the number of microorganisms that could cause disease while not affecting the quality and taste in a way which sterilization would.
This method is still used today and if you check the milk carton, it will say 'pasteurized', but how exactly is this done?

In earlier years people believed that infections and illnesses just happened or even believed it was the devil's work, but Pasteur proved that these illnesses are caused by micro-organisms. His experiments he did on infections proved that he was right.
Pasteur did a lot of studies on the immune system of animals and humans and how it works. He invented the first vaccine for rabies and gave it to a boy in 1885 who's life he saved.
In honor of his work and influential contributions, Pasteur was made a Grand Croix of the Legion of Honor, a prestigious French order.
