Writing about different characters - Tips for kids
We all have different characteristics - that is something that is part of your personality and the way you do things.
Maybe you are good at sport and helpful and happy. Maybe you are lazy and unhappy. Those are called your characteristics.
If you want to write a character sketch about somebody you can write about their physical appearance (what they look like) and their personality (how they are and act).
- You are going to write your own character sketch of somebody you know or you can make up a person. You can even choose a character from a movie, book or play - this will be a description of that person. Write it in such a way, that if a person does not know the person you are writing about, they will get to know them through your writing.
Follow the following steps to help you write
Step 1
Write down some adjectives that you would use to describe the character/person. You really have to think about the person you are describing and use the correct adjectives,
Here are some ideas of words you can use (think out more of your own)
grumpy funny unhappy lazy helpful strange stubborn interesting brave patient clever kind loving honest scruffy busy friendly pretty tall short
Step 2
Think about how this person acts every day and how you have experienced their personalities and what you have seen them do.
Step 3
If you need help, you can use the following framework or you can write the character sketch in the way you want.
My character looks like _____
He/she is good/are not good at _____
He/she feels ____ towards _____ because _____
Other people think he/she is ______
He/she has changed/not changed since I have known them (give examples)
I think he/she is ______
Fill in extra ideas and use full sentences and descriptions (think before you write - there is no wrong way, you have to use your imagination and what you know)
Step 4
Plan your character sketch, then edit it by correcting spelling, punctuation and word order and write it out neatly.
Step 5
Draw a picture or make a collage using photos/pictures of the person you wrote the character sketch on.
