Your digestive system

in #steemiteducation5 years ago

Food is a need.  Without it we cannot live.  Our digestive system makes it possible for the food to be broken down and 'taken up' into our bodies to give us energy to do our daily tasks.  The other task of the digestive system is to get rid of the waste.

Without our digestive system this would not be possible.

  • Have a look at the video to refresh your memory on how the digestive system works and answer the questions

  1. How is the digestive system adapted for different animals?
  2. Which part of your body runs the digestive system?
  3. Why does a dog have a short digestive system?
  4. Why does a cow's digestion take so long?
  5. What does an omnivore eat?
  6. What starts breaking down the food in your mouth?
  7. Why is chewing our food important?
  8. What is the function of the epiglottis?
  9. Explain in your own words what is a 'bolus' and 'peristalsis'
  10. What happens in the stomach?
  11. Why are their mucus in your stomach and how will you get an ulcer?
  12. What is 'chime'?
  13. Explain in your own words what happens in the small intestines.
  14. What is the function of 'bile'?
  15. Explain the function of the large intestine and the built of it.

If you have watched the video and answered the questions, you will now have an idea of how the digestive system works, but lets have a look at some facts that you maybe did not know.

  • Food does not just fall into your stomach when you swallow it, it moves through 'peristalsis', so even if you hang upside down and eat, the food will still reach your stomach.  Gravity has nothing to do with the movement of your food.
  • If you wash your clothes, there are certain enzymes in the washing powder that dissolves the 'grease and grime'.  Your digestive system also secretes (give off) different enzymes to dissolves the different types of food you eat.
Proteases and peptidases split proteins into small peptides and amino acids.
Lipases split fat into three fatty acids and a glycerol molecule.
Amylases split carbohydrates such as starch and sugars into simple sugars such as glucose.
  • Most people believe that most of your food digestion takes place in the stomach.  This is not true - even though the stomach 'churns' the food and mix it with the digestive juices, most of the chemical digestion takes place in the small intestines.
  • The small intestines  is long, very long... almost 7m
  • A lot of food cannot be digested and just gets pushed along in the digestive tract and a lot of bacteria goes to work on this food.  A lot of gases are produced and that gives the smell to the gas you let out.
