The presence of Material Engineering at Malikussaleh University is in line with the times in various fields, especially mining and manufacturing. Material Engineering provides wider opportunities for the supply of labor in various fields.

The assertion was conveyed by the Head of the Material Engineering Study Program at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Malikussaleh, Dr. Zulnazri, after the formation of the new study program. "Almost all industrial fields require skilled and reliable Material Engineering engineers," Zulnazri said on Friday , May 17, 2019.

According to him, Material Engineering is very prospective because it is needed in manufacturing where it can play a role in the fields of production, quality control, product quality, and equipment maintenance. In addition to manufacturing, automotive, mining, petroleum, nuclear, electronic, agricultural, plantation, and various types of factories, where graduates of Materials Engineering develop careers.

"In addition, graduates of material engineering can also work in the energy and mineral resources industries, educational institutions, even in government. You can also become an entrepreneur, especially in the section on determining anti-heat, anti-corrosion, quality control, and so on," added Zulnazri, who considered the presence of Material Engineering at Unimal to be the answer to today's labor and industrial development needs.

The vast scope of Material Engineering, Zulnazri said again, provides opportunities in other fields such as computer science where a computer program is used to computerize materials to see the molecular structure of materials. Material Engineering is also related to biological sciences to study and produce material molecules. "And there are still many other fields. In short, you can make anything without materials," Zulnazri said.

He is optimistic that this study program is very prospective because several national and even international companies today are in desperate need of graduates in Materials Engineering. In fact, the number of workers is very minimal compared to the increasing need PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Aneka Tambang, PT Timah, PT Newmont, PT INCO, PT Inalum, and PT Krakatau Steel are some of the companies where Material Engineering alumni develop careers.

Zulnazri's trust is also based in line with the development of the Arun Lhokseumawe Special Economic Zone that is being built and the wealth of natural resources in Aceh that require a reliable workforce in its field. "And for the Sumatra level, new Material Engineering is in Unimal," says Zulnazri with proudly.

Therefore, according to him, Industrial Engineering students will be educated with high discipline in order to be able to develop competence, professionalism, and global quality in order to have competitiveness.

"The lecture process in the Unimal Material Engineering Study Program is held in a combinative manner between theory transfer and actual analysis. "Lectures are conducted with an interactive discussion model, case analysis, calculation, modeling, simulation, and problem solving," says Zulnazri.[]

Teknik Material Unimal Menjawab Perkembangan Dunia Industri

Kehadiran Teknik Material di Universitas Malikussaleh sejalan dengan perkembangan zaman di berbagai bidang, terutama pertambangan dan manufaktur. Teknik Material memberikan peluang lebih luas bagi penyediaan tenaga kerja di berbagai bidang.

Penegasan itu disampaikan Ketua Program Studi Teknik Material Fakultas Teknik Universitas Malikussaleh, Dr Zulnazri, menyusul terbentuknya prodi baru tersebut. “Hampir semua bidang industri membutuhkan insinyur Teknik Material yang terampil dan andal,” ujar Zulnazri, Jumat (17/5/2019).

Menurutnya, Teknik Material sangat prospektif karena dibutuhkan dalam manufaktur di mana bisa berperan dalam bidang produksi, pengawasan mutu, kualitas produk, dan perawatan peralatan. Selain manufaktur, bidang otomotif, pertambangan, perminyakan, nuklir, elektronik, pertanian, perkebunan, dan berbagai jenis pabrik adalah tempat lulusan Teknik Material mengembangkan karier.

“Selain itu, lulusan Teknik material juga dapat bekerja di industri energi dan sumber daya mineral, lembaga pendidikan, bahkan di pemerintahan. Bisa juga menjadi wiraswasta khususnya pada bagian penentuan bahan antipanas, antikorosi, quality control, dan sebagainya,” tambah Zulnazri yang menganggap kehadiran Teknik Material di Unimal merupakan jawaban terhadap kebutuhan tenaga kerja dan perkembangan industri dewasa ini.

Cakupan Teknik Material yang sangat luas, kata Zulnazri lagi, memberikan peluang di bidang lain seperti ilmu komputer di mana sebuah program komputer digunakan untuk melakukan komputerisasi material untuk melihat struktur molekul material. Teknik Material juga terkait dengan ilmu biologi untuk mengkaji dan memproduksi molekul material. “Dan masih banyak bidang yang lain. Singkatnya, you can’t make anything without materials,” kata Zulnazri.

Dia optimis program studi ini sangat prospektif karena beberapa perusahaan berskala nasional bahkan internasional saat ini, sangat membutuhkan lulusan Teknik Material. Bahkan, jumlah tenaga kerja sangat minim dibandingkan kebutuhan yang terus meningkat. PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Aneka Tambang, PT Timah, PT Newmont, PT INCO, PT Inalum, dan PT Krakatau Steel adalah beberapa perusahaan tempat alumni Teknik Material mengembangkan karier.

Kepercayaan Zulnazri juga didasarkan sejalan dengan pengembangan Kawasan Ekonomi Khusus Arun Lhokseumawe yang sedang dibangun serta kekayaan sumber daya alam di Aceh yang membutuhkan tenaga kerja andal di bidangnya. “Dan untuk tingkat Sumatra, Teknik Material baru ada di Unimal,” ungkap Zulnazri bangga.

Untuk itu, mahasiswa Teknik Industri menurutnya akan dididik dengan kedisiplinan tinggi agar mampu mengembangkan kompetensi, profesionalisme, dan berkualitas global agar memiliki daya saing.
“Proses perkuliahan di Program Studi Teknik Material Unimal diselenggarakan secara kombinatif antara transfer teori dan analisis aktual. Perkuliahan dilakukan dengan model diskusi interaktif, analisis kasus, perhitungan, permodelan, simulasi, dan pemecahan masalah,” tandas Zulnazri.[]
