Quick & Fun Experiments: Fire Hands!
Today we are back with yet another fun experiment! This experiment is definitely going to freak you out and give you a thrill, so if you're interested to know more about this experiment then keep scrolling down!
What you'll need:
- Water
- Long Handled lighter
- Methane gas
- Safety glasses
- Dishwashing Liquid
- Balloon
- Large bowl
What to do:
- Add water to a large bowl.
- Squirt a bit of the dishwashing liquid into the water.
- Fill a balloon with methane gas.
- Get a tube and put it into the mouth of the balloon and put your finger on the tip of the tube to stop the methane gas from escaping.
- Move your finger from the tip of the tube and submerge it into the soapy water. Also make sure that you are gently squeezing the balloon to create some bubbles.
- You're going to need someone to help you with next step. One person will need to continue to gently squeeze the balloon while the other completely submerges either one hand or both hands into the water, you need to make sure they are completely wet otherwise you would burn yourself.
- Now all you need to do is scoop up some bubbles with your hand or hands and have someone put on the lighter! At first you'll see a large flame on your hand or hands but it will go away within a few seconds so don't freak out!
- All that's left to do now is enjoy!
Why does this happen?:
Remember that the bubbles are filled with methane gas and methane gas just so happens to be lighter than air. So when you set the bubbles on fire, they evaporate and turn into carbon dioxide and water. In addition to this, Water is an amazing conductor of heat so as the water on your hands is heating up some of the water on your hands is evaporates and produces a cooling a effect which then keeps your hands from burning.
Tip!:
Wear an apron and safety glasses.
Before each time you set your hands on fire, make sure that you submerge them into plain water.
