Strong & Powerful Women: Mae C. Jemison

The next lady we are going to read about today is Mae C. Jemison, this woman had big dreams and made sure she achieved them.

Mae C. Jemison was born on October 17th, 1956, in Decatur, Alabama, daughter of Dorothy Green Jemison and Charlie Jemison. She is the youngest of her two older siblings, her older brother Charles Jemison and sister Ada Jemison Bullock. Growing up, Mae was very much so interested in science that she ended up spending most of her time in the library reading a lot of books about science but mostly astronomy. In high school, Mae was a consistent honour student but also loved dancing and being in theatre productions.

When Mae was 16 she began college at Stanford University to study chemical engineering, which she then graduated from with a Bachelor of Science degree. She then decided that she wanted to become a doctor and that's when she entered Cornell University Medical Center and a couple years later once she had gotten her M.D, she began interning at the Los Angeles County/University of Southern California Medical Center. Mae then worked there as a practitioner for a while.

You'd think that after accomplishing so much that she'd be done with dreaming big but not Mae.

In 1987, Mae decided to follow her long time dream of becoming an astronaut and she applied into NASA's astronaut training program! It was in 1988 when she completed the program and ended up being the first African American female astronaut!

Mae C. Jemison has been awarded with quite a few awards in her life for her achievements such as the Essence Science and Technology award, Gamma Sigma Gamma Women of the Year in 1989, Turner Trumpet Award, Ebony Achievement award , Elizabeth Blackwell medal,  The Kilby Science Award,  Johnson Publications Black Achievement Trailblazers Award and the honorary doctorate of science.

I have no idea how Mae C. Jemison was able to study chemical engineering, then become a doctor and then become the first African American female to go into space. She is a living legend who proved that you can never have too many dreams, especially if it's something you really want then you should work hard to get it!
