Developing Students' Communicative Skills

in #steemiteducation6 years ago (edited)

In order to make your students talk in class you need to create an environment where they have the facilities to express themselves. This is very important because when they go into the world, they will face more threatening scenarios.

So, it is imperative to make them talk. It's not useful when all the talking is on teacher. Any class with that approach is boring and brings no interest. One single voice doesn't make the class transcend. It just make it small and utterly monotonous.

Identify the causes

The students who don't engage with the teachers are not same. All of them have different reasons. Those can be:

  • Shyness
  • Indifference
  • Fear of failure
  • Distractions

It is easier if teachers can deal with one student. But for those teachers in public schools where they have to deal with big groups, getting all of them to talk can be a challenge.

Some students may get through this just because there might be some incentives (scores) to express ideas in class. However, that wouldn't be the ultimate goal. This strategies should aim formative purpose, which will help them in the future when they venture into their chosen careers.

Making the class more conversational from the beginning

This might not applied to much for science subjects, where you have to work using a board or in a laboratory. But there's always room for taking a little time to form discussions where all of them share their ideas before going into practice. Also, after the practice they can get together again to discuss theirs results.

With other subjects, teachers can base their teachings on this conversational approach. It's not a secret that students get more interested when something is explained to them orally than using a board. Moreover, this can provoke a reaction where the students answer back, sharing their thoughts and ideas (engagement)

Sometimes, it is helpful to start the class with a meeting before entering into educational topics. Just like any chat, the teacher alongside with the students can talk about other topics that can be of general interest. This way, students get warmed up so to speak. The barrier that some of them might feel can be tumbled down if they see their teacher not as a stubborn authority, rather as a fair person that welcomes discussion.

More oral presentations

IF the majority of students have hard time expressing in class, so why not organize more oral presentations. I think students eventually like it even more than written assignments. The angle is so wide that teachers can manage to expand to different terrains.

One important thing to consider is to give students the freedom to express their thoughts. There are oral presentations that just limit their interventions.

But by giving them the liberty to share their ideas, they wouldn't see it as assignments. They would internalize more their formative goal. And this is the priority. Getting the good grades should be just the consequence of excellent performance, but not the ultimate goal.

That's why there are some cases where some students don't support their scores with facts when they are tested in real situations.

A number, a letter or any type of grade doesn't really qualify you. Your worth come out when you put into practice what you know.
