Beach Playground on a Feltboard

beach.jpg

I saw Fergus placing the wooden coloured shapes upright on the felt board, so I asked him what he was doing. He said, "Sharks!" as he pointed to the blue diamond shaped blocks which he placed on the blue part of the board.

I asked him, "What about these white ones, what are they?" Fergus replied, "See-saw!" Then, he pointed to the red and yellow shapes, and said, "Climbing things!" Then I asked, "Why are there green ones on top of the yellow hexagons?" Fergus replied, "They're roofs! It's the playground at the beach!"

Reflection:

Fergus used shapes and colours in his play to represent and make meaning of the things he had observed in the real world, and in doing so, he created his own small world, which is the beach playground. He showed an ability to describe attributes of the objects in his small world and made connections between his small world and his real experience of the playground at the beach. Fergus also responded enthusiastically and confidently to his Educator and was able to convey his thoughts when asked about what he was working on.

The above narrative and reflection is a sample documented observation that I, as a Preschool Educator, make on the child to describe his play behaviour and the development of his cognitive, numeracy, and literacy skills. The specific purposes of observations in the early childhood settings are the following:

  • Planning the programs or experiences
  • Gauging and knowing if the child has achieved his or her goals
  • Describing the child's interest, skills, and abilities
  • Providing parents with information about their child's learning and experiences
