Benefits of Physical Activity to Young Children

playground.jpg

Children need exercise, lots of physical movements, music and more time outdoors. They should be given more opportunities to develop their physical skills, such as locomotor, stability or balance and manipulative, in order to achieve their maximum potential.

  • Locomotor skills include running, walking, jogging, skipping, sprinting.
  • Stability skills include balancing, jumping.
  • Manipulative skills include throwing, catching, batting, gripping.
When children grow up and are used to developing these skills, they can become confident and physically active adults. Through experiences that involve physical activities, children are also learning cooperative learning skills and important social and emotional skills that are necessary for building relationships with other children. Furthermore, because they are not confined within the four corners of their house, they can become more in tune with their environment and can connect to the natural world.

Two weeks ago, our centre took our little darlings to the bush farm, and we finally had our Bush Kindy Adventure. Although we did not see any wild animal, such as kangaroos or emus, the children, as well as the teachers, still had a blast! We walked through the saltbush and children investigated the natural materials that they found along the way. They found ant hills and ant holes, large and heavy branches, animal bones (which they quickly conclude as "dinosaur bones") and lots more.

There were endless opportunities for learning. They worked on those physical skills as they took reasonable risks in climbing up trees or crawling under branches. There was a trough that they transformed into their mini-playground.

Overall, children had a 3-hour bush kindy fun!!! By the time we got back to our Centre, the Teachers and Educators were all spent, but the children still had so much energy to play and run around the yard and the playground.

But of course, we allowed them to expend their energy, at the same time, reminded them constantly to replenish their body with food and water. Whilst we were drained, these kids still had their tanks full!

As parents and teachers, we must always encourage children to be engaged in physical activity. They do not need to feel ashamed for their restlessness and physicality. When children's desires to be active are respected and encouraged through appropriate activities, positive emotions are created and fostered.

Keep in mind, though, that young children are always ready to go, and they don't like repetitive or structured drill activities. Their minds are too "dynamic" for boring repetitions, so we need to keep our physical activities fun with change and varieties. Weekends and school holidays are also a great time to take advantage of your children's urges to move, be active, explore, and spend time outdoors!

I hope @dynamicshine (my sister), @ryl, @dangerousangel, @lantracy, and @antonette are motivated to get their children become more active and explore the outside environment. Take them to the park so they can work on their physical skills. Play sports with them. You will also reap the benefits of becoming more involved with your children's physical activities because you get to do cardio and aerobic exercises, which are good for your overall health in mind and body.

As I kid, I loved play time, the running the jumping the swinging, I am glad that all the phscyo teachers were not in any of the schools I went to. we, (us kids) were allowed to be kids free from all the pills of today because of the lazy teachers and educators of today. All kids to one level or another are hyperactive, adults and shrinks call it hyper, because they are to fat an lazy to keep up with the kids.

Your comment actually made me laugh, with your use of "psycho" to describe some teachers. Haha!!! I'm glad I am able to keep up with the children at our Centre. When they want to play soccer or Australian football, I play with them. I chase them, they chase me. But they know their boundaries, that when it's time to rest or eat, they stop and take a break from play. The good thing about providing the children with the "free range" or choice to play is they are able to know their bodies even more. They learn how to self-regulate.

When children's desires to be active are respected and encouraged through appropriate activities, positive emotions are created and fostered.

That is absolutely true. And when they are in school being so restricted to doing so much, it is that much more important to let them have fun. That is why I am against homework in the early years of school.
Playing outdoors is also learning. Being in tune with nature is very important and the kids should have more of that. Taking time to learn school stuff outside would be so great for them. Wishing that the teachers and school boards here could see that.

Our Early Learning Centre promotes a play-based learning environment. Yes, academic learning is also important, but during the early years, it is more crucial that children develop the necessary skills that will set them up for success in their later years and the skills that will make them good problem solvers, resilient and fit in terms of their social and emotional aspects.
