Bible stories for kids 10 - Abraham, Isaac and Rebekah

Genesis 24: 1-66

Abraham was now a very old man, he was blessed by God in many ways. His wife Sarah had died and was buried in a cave near Mamre, which is at Hebron, in the land of Canaan.

Abraham wanted to make sure before he dies that his son Isaac marry a good wife and not a wife from the tribes that did not worship God. Abraham called his oldest servant and said, “Put your hand under my leg and promise me before God that you will not allow my son to marry a girl from Canaan. So the servant put his hand under his master’s leg and made the promise.

Abraham said that the Lord, the God of heaven will send his angel before you so that you can choose a wife for my son. The servant took ten of Abraham’s camels and went to Mesopotamia.

When he came to the town of Nahor, he went to the water well outside the city. There he made the camels kneel down at the well.

The servant prayed to God, “Lord, you are the God of my master Abraham. Please help me to find the right woman for Isaac.

I will ask them for water. The one that says, ‘Drink, and I will also give water to your camels,’ I will know that she is the right one. Before the servant finished praying, a very pretty young woman named Rebekah came to the well with her water jar on her shoulder.

The servant ran to her and said, “Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.” Rebekah quickly lowered the jar from her shoulder and gave him a drink.

As soon as she finished giving him something to drink, She ran to fetch more water, and gave water to all the camels.

The servant quietly watched her. He wanted to be sure that the Lord had given him an answer and had made his trip successful. He had take out a gold nose ring and two gold bracelets. He asked Rebekah whose daughter she was and if her father would have a place for him to overnight?

Rebekah said: “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milkah bore to Nahor.” 25 And she added, “We have plenty of straw and fodder, as well as room for you to spend the night.”

Rebekah's brother Laban saw her coming home with the gold nose ring and the bracelets and Rebekah told Laban what had happened at the will so Laban went back to go fetch the slave and his camels at the well.

The servant told Laban and Rebekah's father Bethuel everything from the time that Abraham send him to find Isaac a wife. After they heard everything from Abraham's slave they said:
“This is from the Lord; we can say nothing to you one way or the other. Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.”

The servant took out gifts of gold, silver and clothing and gave it to Rebekah and he gave costly gifts to her mother and brother. The servant asked if Rebekah can go the next day but her mother and brother said, let she stay with us for ten days. After ten days she returned home with him.

One evening Isaac went out to the field to think. When he looked up he saw the camels coming from far away. Rebekah also looked and saw Isaac. She jumped down from the camel. She said to the servant, “Who is that young man? The servant said, “That is my master’s son.” So Rebekah covered her face with her veil. The servant told Isaac everything that had happened at the water well.

Isaac was now 40 years old, he took Rebekah into his mother's tent and she became his wife. He loved her and it comforted him after the death of his mother Sarah.

Next time I will tell you about the sons that Isaac and Rebekah had.
