A perspective of sharing

in #steemiteducation5 years ago (edited)

There are many parents who may teach their children to share but there are also those who do not do so.

The idea of sharing does not come naturally to children.

Most children are usually takers rather than givers.

The fact that they are always the ones who get what they want at home so many children find it hard to give or share with children of their same age group.

Two types of sharing

When we are thinking about sharing, most adults may be thinking about children using things together like colour pencils to do colouring.

Sharing can be the willingness to let others use the same item together but we are not giving the item away.

Another form of sharing is to give a portion of what we have so that others may have some of the same item like sharing a piece of cake or some sweets.

It may not be easy for young children to understand what is sharing especially the concept of sharing can come in more than one way.

Very often, adults need to use teachable moments to teach their children how to share.

Acknowledgement

I had opportunities to look after the six-year-old students in my school when their subject teachers were on medical leave.

It is important to keep these little ones meaningfully occupied so I took some pictures related to racial harmony for them to colour when I was put down to look after them.

When I entered the class, some students did not have colour pencils. I asked the other students whether they were willing to share.

There were some who offered to do so and I affirmed and acknowledged their good attitude of sharing.

Through this, I had given acknowledgement to those who had shared.

The others who did not share would also learn that it was a good act as a teacher acknowledged this act of sharing openly.

Role model

The photograph below is an umbrella sharing initiative around my neighbourhood.

I took the above photograph using my mobile phone as it is really nice sharing initiative that encourages sharing.

During a rainy day, this sharing programme can be very useful especially for those who have forgotten to bring an umbrella.

This is definitely a great idea to nurture the culture of sharing within the community.

Children are often imitators of their parents.

When their parents give away the extra umbrella to this initiative because they have enough umbrellas at home, their children may gain the concept of sharing their own things when they have more than enough.

When they see their parents often sharing what they have with others, they would naturally share what they have with others.

Scolding a child to share may often be an obligation rather than willingness from the heart.

Parents may want to cultivate the good value of sharing but scolding them and punishing them for not doing so can have adverse effect.

Before getting our children to share, we should show them how we share first.

We should never say things that we cannot do ourselves.

Let's put our words into actions first before encouraging them to share.

Create the opportunity

Opportunity for sharing can also be created by parents. We can always buy one slice of cake and get our children to share.

We can bring the situation to them so that they can suggest sharing as an opinion.

This can bring the ownership of sharing to them and they can experience the joy of sharing.

Getting appreciated and appreciating others are both good values to cultivate in our children.

There can be many situations that parents and teachers can create to allow children to share.

In conclusion

Sharing is really a good characteristic that we want our children to have.

When they become adults, they may establish many good social relationships through the habit of sharing in their workplace.

They can also learn the need to share resources whenever they are working in a team.

Sharing may not just only be a good value but a lifeskill in their adulthood.
