A teacher who did not give up

Education is important to provide knowledge and life skills for our children for their future.

Every child deserves an equal head start regardless of their home challenges.

The videoclip below is based on a true story of how a preschool teacher made an effort to help a student in her class who had missed her lessons.

A concerned teacher

In the story, Emily had been missing lessons from her preschool for many days.

Her teacher called her parents but no one picked up the call.

She went to her house regularly to seek for an opportunity to find out what had happened to her student.

It was such an admirable spirit of determination to help her student and going the extra mile.

Every stage of education is important and every child should be given the equal opportunity to learn.

With her determination, her teacher finally got to meet her student’s mum.

Beneath the iceberg

In the story, her teacher found out about her home condition.

It is true that we cannot see what is beneath the iceberg and the problem can be bigger than what we can see.

Her student’s mum was deaf and her dad suffered from stroke recently.

As a result, her mum had to take care of her dad and was not able to send her child to school.

In the video, her mum indicated that she was not able to let her go to school with her hand gesture.

Her teacher did not give up and she made the effort to fetch her from home as well as send her home after school daily.

By understanding the actual home situation, teachers would not jump to conclusion without finding out the facts.

From the actual situation, we can find ways to assist and help our students.

Teach from the heart

Anyone can be a teacher but not everyone can be an effective teacher.

An effective teacher can teach his/her subject effectively but not every effective teacher is a caring teacher.

A caring teacher can have the passion and care for his/her students but not everyone can put their passion and care into actual actions to go the extra mile beyond school.

As teachers, we can educate the head but we also need to educate the heart.

By teaching our students about the importance of learning through what we do even out of school for them, they can see our heart as true educators.

When we set a good example of how learning should educate not just the head but the heart, we are educating the whole child.

In the videoclip below, a stranger paid for a cake when a boy wanted one but her mum was not able to afford it.

When the boy grew up, he also chose to give without expecting a return and he considered it as a favour to be able to give.

Little did he know that he was giving back to the same man who once had given him.

This is the ripple effect and we can start the ripple as educators that teach from the heart.

In conclusion

Very often, we may have students who may not attend in lessons for many days but we have not gone the extra mile to find out why.

There can be reasons that we need to discover. We can learn and understand why a student behaves in unacceptable ways in school and outside school.

There are so many complicated families and we only get to see our students without their home problems.

By not judging what we see on the surface, we can provide support at the root of the problem leading to life-changing experience for our students.
