Beneath the surface of fierceness is a heart of love

Very often, some teachers may appear to be fierce to their students and they may look unreasonable.

Beneath the surface of stern discipline, there is a concern for our students’ future and undeveloped potential.

The videoclip below is a nice resource for older kids to let them know about teachers, who appear to be fierce, may have a reason behind it.

Neglected child

In this modern society, we face many teenagers and students who vent their frustrations in school due to being neglected by their parents at home.

They often return home with no one at home and parents are too busy at work so they usually cannot attend their school events.

Many modern parents are concerned about their financial to the point that they may have neglected the need to spend time and participate in their children's activities.

They would work overtime and stay at their offices to complete a major project rather than spend time with their children.

With this neglect, problems start to surface at school and by the time these parents get to know about it, it is already too late.

Fierce and stern outlook of teachers

Not every teacher appears to be caring and loving.

Some may appear to be stern and fierce but with their students’ welfare in mind.

In the video, the teacher made the difficult student to become monitor to learn responsibility.

She used detention and scolding for all the wrongdoing of her student.

During a confrontation, the teacher told the student that she saw potential in him and did not want him to waste his life.

The impact of the fierce teacher who cried may have triggered the student to understand the heart of his teacher.

In the end, the student started to change.

Through this video, we can get students to understand why teachers are fierce and what true purpose behind it.

Students can discuss and state examples of incidents when they were scolded by their teachers in the past.

They can then reflect the possible reasons behind the scolding.

Reflection for teachers

We understand the need to be fierce or stern in class but very often our students cannot sense our care for them.

We need to handle different students using different approaches to have a more effective outcome.

With her understanding, she managed to build her student’s interest in learning through little successes.

Very often, we cannot see the real reason for their misbehaviours unless we find out more through home visits.

Through understanding the actual situation, teachers can decide the next possible best intervention for the student with his/her welfare in mind.

In conclusion

Students without good home support may just need our care to know that someone still cares for them.

They may feel that their existence is without meaning so they have given up on themselves since they think that no one cares.

As educators, we cannot just teach the minds but we need to mend the heart when we see a big hole to be filled.
