How do we nurture creativity?
One of the main obstacles that hinders creativity is the fear to challenge the norms.
Stepping out of the comfort zone can be rather challenging especially for adults.
A creative idea often may not be your first thought as the first thought is usually your old idea that you are accustomed to. You need to ignore it and brainstorm whether there is any other alternative.
Sub-questions about the main question
It is very common that we want to address and answer once we are given a problem or question.
Rarely would many of us think of questions about the problem given before jumping into conclusion unless we practise it.
Example: How can we help pupils with special needs?
Sub-questions:
What kind of help are we talking about?
Who are the special needs?
What are the skills do we need to help them?
What kind of special needs?
We can ask many sub-questions to ensure and trigger thinking so that we can have a good overview of the problem.
This can really redefine the question or problem more clearly.
Find more solutions
The first suggestion that you think of may be an old solution. You must go through the brainstorming process to generate fresh ideas. It is great to have a team to do it together so that the brainstorming session can be more fruitful.
Select solution
One of the most effective ways is to go by voting so that the majority opinion of the solution can be selected.
By doing so, we can ensure that it can be the best possible solution that is not based on just an individual decision.
Test out the solution
A selected solution may not always be the best unless you test it out. By testing it out ensure that it is a bulletproof solution with high percentage of success.
Get the targeted participants to try out the solution. You can also get critical friends to give some constructive opinions about the suggested solution.
This ensure that the solution is effective to the given problem with more evaluation.
Review
After the test, review all the given feedback as a group. Decide whether it is the best possible outcome. If the group feels that it is not a good resolution, you may need to go back and reselect solution again.
In conclusion
There are really many ways to let the creativity flow. The above is really just a simple brainstorming routine that you can consider using or modify it for better effectiveness.
Creativity can be your nature but it can also be nurtured by the right conditions.
