In all schools, we try our best to educate our students so that they can avoid picking up the habit of smoking.

The fact that there are many harmful effects that smoking can bring to them as well as the ones around them.

It is better to educate them so that students do not pick up the addiction since once addicted, it is hard to quit smoking.

This short article is going to just discuss some things that teachers do in school in the smoking prevention programme.

Anti-smoking cartoon

Everyone agrees that cartoon appeals to young children better than telling them.

Through engaging cartoons, young students can understand the harmful effects of tobacco to our bodies.

Harmful effects of tobacco

For the older students, we can go straight into the harmful effects of tobacco by getting them to watch a videoclip.

They can then identify the different harmful effects through discussion with their classmates.

Role play

Having a role play on how to reject the offer of smoking by peers is necessary especially there are many students who may not know how to do so.

Through role play, classmates can brainstorm and discuss different ways to reject and avoid smoking.

They can learn how to deal with peer pressure and be firmed with their principles and decision.

Negative adult model becomes adviser

We are all aware that there may be smokers in the homes of our students.

It can be hard especially their parents are often smoking in their presence.

We can have a good classroom discussion on how to have the right mindset even when their parents are smoking.

Parents, who are smokers, can also share how smoking may have affected them negatively since all parents want the best for their children.

Parents, who are smokers, can play an important role in educating their children and share about their regrets of picking up the habits as well.

By sharing their genuine thoughts about the addiction, they can lead their children not to take up the addiction of smoking.

Cost of smoking

If an average smoker needs 2 packs of cigarette daily.

It may easily cost about US$10. Within a month, it will cost about US$300.

That would mean a smoker would spend about US$3600 yearly on smoking.

Smoking for 10 years would lose US$36 000. I am estimating at the lowest possible cost of smoking.

I guess everyone knows that health can be an issue but it can hurt our finances by picking up smoking.

When our health fails, healthcare cost would be another issue to think about.

In conclusion

As teachers, we do try our best to educate our students not to pick up smoking.

Smoking Prevention Programme aims to cultivate the right mindset so that our students can live a healthy lifestyle as adults without the habit of smoking.

The truth is we can educate them but the final decision is still rest upon them.

Teachers and parents do hope for a better generation that does not pick up smoking.
