Unexpected Examination Conditions

in #steemiteducation5 years ago (edited)

It is exam period for my students again. They are taking their mid-year examinations.

I usually feel rather sleepy when I am taking the role of an invigilator since I simply have to give out the exam papers and supervise to ensure no one cheats.

Nevertheless, there are interesting conditions that can happen and invigilators for examinations would need to deal with them accordingly.

Vomit

There were times when students who were not feeling well but they chose to keep to themselves and endure.

They may suddenly vomit and it becomes a big issue especially if it is an air-conditioned room.

The smell can be really unbearable and the school cleaners would need to inform to clean the mess immediately.

As for the unwell student, he may need to have a change of clothes as well as getting parents to fetch him.

The dilemma comes whether the child should complete the paper since it may be almost done.

The decision would often rest upon the child’s condition and his parent’s decision.

The worst is when the child vomit onto a completed exam script.

We had ever faced this and teachers would still need to mark the script but separate it from the rest.

Wet Themselves

There were also many cases when children were too afraid to ask for the washroom due to exam condition.

They were afraid to ask for permission from the unfamiliar teachers.

When they wet themselves, they would need to change and the cleaners would need to settle the unexpected crisis again.

It is an embarrassing moment and there can be students who may laugh at the child.

Teachers must always remain calmed to handle the situation because our emotions can affect our students.

Refusal To Submit The Script

All examinations have a fix time for standardisation and fairness of assessment.

There was ever a student who refused to submit his script during the national examination as he had not completed the paper.

It was serious as it was not just a school exam but the national examination to determine the next step of education after leaving current school.

In the end, I remembered the chief examiner had to rush up to handle the situation.

The student eventually had to conform because he could be awarded a zero mark for not following the exam rule.

In Conclusion

This article is just a short sharing about some experiences that I had since it is exam period for my school again.

I felt inspired to write a short article on this subject when I was invigilating the examination.

I guess it is not easy to be a teacher since a teacher is not just to teach nowadays but we are wearing many different types of hats.

Hi fun2learn,

you describe extreme conditions. I have been teaching at a university and I am teaching now at a the high school level and never saw something similar. Ok, we had one oral exam, where the student wanted to do the exam though he felt ill. He asked my professor what to do in case he would vomit. My boss thought for a second and then handed him the rubbish bin...

I admire your ability of being calm in an exam. Even in a small test I give to my students I get excited, too. But maybe I just need more routine.

Great post, keep up with the good work!

Thank you for your regular support and your comment. I am teaching at Primary level so these things do happen and teachers who have been teaching for some years would have experienced them. Staying calm regardless of situation is important since we are the role model for students.
