Elia's Tears (An Original Children's Story)

In the olden days, there was a little girl who lived in a dry and barren land where rain only happened once in every five years. It was impossible to grow plants and crops or even raise animals because the people who lived there can hardly feed themselves. They all knew that the town was cursed, but her family was poor, and so they couldn't afford to move on to a different town. Everyday had been a new struggle for them, not knowing where the next meal would be coming from.

The little girl's name was Elia. She was loved by everyone and was cherished by her family. At her young age, she knew how to value the smallest things that they have, that's why the fairies who lived in the land were all pleased with her. They knew that someday, the little girl will be able to help her family.

One day, Elia was asked by her grandmother to fetch some water from the well. Carrying an old tin pail, she went off to do the task. She filled the tin with water and headed back home. On her way, she saw a frail old woman heading to the well. She had no pail, or pitcher, but she looked so thirsty. Elia approached the old woman and offered her some water from her pail. The old woman thanked her for her kindness and disappeared in a snap.

The little girl found herself speechless. The old woman disappeared right in front of her! She absent-mindedly filled her pail again as tears began to fall from her eyes, and immediately ran all the way home when she was finished.

She was still crying when she reached their house, and her grandmother asked her what was wrong. She told her grandma everything that happened in the well, but after a minute or two, the woman was no longer listening. Her eyes were focused on the flowers that had sprouted on Elia's feet.

Elia's grandmother ran outside and saw that the path that led to the well was filled with flowers of different colors and kinds. It was exactly the same path that Elia took earlier.

Soon enough, the people in their land learned about what happened, and they all believed that the town's curse was finally broken. They started planting their crops and hoped for the best.

But months had passed and not a single seed had survived. Everyone went on with their lives, except for Elia. She went to the well everyday and waited for the old woman to show up.

One day, as she sat beside the well, Elia fell asleep and had a dream. It was the exact scene from the day she met the old woman. In her dream, Elia saw herself running from the well as she cried, she saw how her tears landed on the ground like drops of rain. And she saw how the tiny leaves sprouted from every spot that her tears had landed on.

She woke up enlightened, and decided to see if the dream was true. She went to the small clearing where her neighbors had planted their crops and tried her best to water them all with her tears. And she did not fail, for not long after, tiny sprouts started to appear on the ground.

She never told anyone about it, but spent the next afternoons looking after the crops to make sure they're all healthy. She planted more seeds all over the piece of land and they've all grown beautifully over time. The people in town were all happy because they knew that they will never be hungry again.

It didn't take long and the town was filled with crops and other plants. Elia's family had consistently produced corn and wheat as well, for trade and for their own consumption. They couldn't ask for more. Elia was quietly proud of herself for what she had accomplished, and the fairies were also proud of her for being able to help others with the gift they have given her.
