What to do with children than learn faster than others.

This could be a problem for the teacher, as there are children that she has to help more, and longer than others to understand and know what she is explaining.

Sometimes these children that learnt faster than others, could become a problem as they would then be bored.

At first the teacher would give them extra work, which did not seem right to me, why should they do more work than the others.

It just happens that some children learn faster than others. All children have abilities to be good at something, and others might not have the same ability.

One day, one of the teachers told me she had a few children in her class that really learn fast.  It is a problem because if she does not give them more work to do they start playing and making jokes.

It is quite understandable because they are bored, but it is not right to the children who are struggling a bit, and we decided that we must make a plan.

Extra work for something they understood seemed more like punishment than praise.

We decided that we would put two computers in every class, and when a child knows what to do according to the teacher, she would give him a list of things to go and explore on the internet.

The children all loved this, and started working harder just so that they can have a turn at the computer.

Use google and give them a task to look for.

Sometimes she would ask them to write a story, or to find things out about animals and other interesting things.

The children absolutely enjoyed this, and they were not a nuisance anymore as they had something interesting to do.

This made life easier for the teacher as well as the children who were still struggling to understand.

There was a program on the computer as well to teach children how to type, and this they all loved as they started competing at the speed of their typing.

Remember this was a long time ago and there were different things for them to do. 

I personally liked the idea of typing as I knew some of them would one day work with computers and typing was a very good idea as this made working on the computer easier.

We started with two classes and then added two computers to all the classes as it cost money and we had to budget for new computers.

At the end of my time being at the school, all classes had two computers and I can assure you that there were many children that could type reasonable.

For little ones typing are not that easy, and this typing program really helped a lot.

So this was one way we really made a difference without making any child feel bad, because they were slower than others, as the teacher had more time for them.

The faster children could not wait to get to the computers and really concentrated very hard when something was explained so that they understood and knew when the teacher asked they could answer all her questions and she would know that they really understood the work.

So know these faster children had an incentive to work harder as they knew they would get a turn at the computer.

In the days I am talking about computers were still very new and not as smart as they are today, so they really started from the basics and this made them happy and they were no longer bored.

After six months there was an improvement in the whole class average, their marks went up with 20-30% as everyone got enough attention and they were all motivated to get to the computer.

I really think is the way to go for many schools as it really worked.

Thank you for this post! It really drives me crazy when I hear other teachers say that they have bored students in their class. Our job is to teach all students and for us to meet the needs of every one in doing so. There are so many ways to keep students engaged, it just takes a little extra effort on our part. And oh, the rewards!
