ALL CHILDREN SHOULD DO SOME EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY AT SCHOOL
As principal I always felt that the children in primary school have to try every activity possible.
The reason being, that no one knows what any child is capable of before they have tried.
Sometimes parents as well as teachers might be very surprised to find out what the child is capable of when they try something for the first time.
It will be very obvious when they try that they have the ability or not.
Athletics is some of the most important ones to start with.
There are children who love athletics and there are children who hate it.
My granddaughter loves hockey and netball and is very good at it, for which I am very thankful. But if she was not there are other activities for her to participate in.
Children who are not good at athletics can play chess, take part in debate and even do art there are choirs as well as other lovely things to do.
All these things are available at school because children have to do an extracurricular activity. It is so important for their competitiveness as well as socialising. Some children even like working in the school garden.
When children do not socialise we must really find out why. It could be that they are shy, or it could be that they have problems that we do not know of.
All these things we do are for a reason. We learn a lot about a child in class, but we do not have that special bond as when they are in a small group and then they can be watched and taught what to do.
That is why we can normally find out if a child does have a problem or not.
Then there are children who can do anything from sport to chess and even take part in debates but they are not that many.
Most children do excel at normally one or two activities.
But as I said in the beginning if they do not try they will not ever know. In the beginning we must not expect parents to buy the right clothes for what they are starting off with.
I really think this must only come when the child is picked for a team and they start playing against other schools.
So please do not make it expensive for the parents, first see what the child is going to do.
When they go to high school they will definitely know what they are going to do and then things might change a lot.
Golf has just become a very big part of sport at school and that can really make parents pay a lot of money. But if your child is good at it there are many ways to make plans to help them.
Normally school children get discount at clubs and that also help.
Never think that when a child is good at debate or chess that there is a difference in the children as they all have their own abilities.
It does not mean that an athlete is better than a chess player, they are exactly the same they just have different abilities.
Please when you send your child to school, let them try everything they might really surprise you.
