More blessed to give than to receive
Cultivate the giving spirit in children is something that parents and educators must consider and plan carefully to make it meaningful without forcing.

Most parents and teachers always tell their children what to do but these children always go back to do what you do not want them to do.
The more you said that they shouldn't, the more they do what you want to stop.
The whole cycle repeats itself. Some parents even bring out the cane.
Humans have the tendency to fulfill the negative than the positive.
Shouting and scolding may not get what you want but you may end up with many conflicts with your children.
Role model
It is very simple but powerful to children especially they like to imitate what adults are doing.
Just like a bad habit of smoking.
When they see adults doing it and they find it cool, the chances of them doing it is very high.
As parents and teachers, live by examples.
Show them how giving can be like and the joy of giving without expecting return.
Let them feel that being able to give is a privilege as they have more to spare.
Cultivate the joy of giving without expecting return is really a great character that we will appreciate in many years to come.

I totally agree with you, how we communicate with kids is so important. Everything they see or hear becomes a part of their understanding of the world.
