Pacing And Engagement Methods Of Teaching In Sekyere Central Basic Schools In Ghana.

Hello Ladies and Gentlement of @Steemiteducation greetings to you all!

It is really true that pupils learn at their own comfort when they are given the room to learn with little support and engagement. Sometimes, many teachers make mistakes by thinking that children are tabula rasa, that they cannot cogitate well and come out with their own ideas when they are given a task. This is indeed a wrong perceptions on the part of my colleagues teachers in Ghana. Because of this, it got to a time that even teachers in Basic Schools in Ghana were using "Lecture Methods" of teaching, instead of Discussions and Demonstrations. We can effect changes and make education more lovely with lots of activity based methods to give more room for these kids to learn on their own with little support.

Thank God we are half way through with this challenges of Teachers always spoon-feeding the children and creating ideas for them, instead of allowing them to create their own ideas. Ashanti Development, Non Governmental Organisation in collaboration with Ghana Education in Ashanti Region have been able to come out with a good methods of teaching pupils in Basic Schools, this method is called " Engagement and Pacing." It is UK based teaching methods, brought to Ghana by David Banze, specialised in the methods of teaching Basic Schools. Since they wanted to test for the effectiveness of the programme in Ghanaians pupils in Basic Schools, the method was in pilot basis, where we were very fortunate to have the share of this cake in our District- Sekyere Central of Ashanti Region, Ghana.

Engagement and Pacing method of teaching in Basic Schools is a method of teaching whereby pupils are paired up, and given a certain task/activity within a given time with the teacher being a facilitator. In this method, pupils are to work together, given teaching materials to come out with feedbacks within the time given. Teachers do not lecture plenty, however, about ninety percent of the classroom works are done by pupils, the only thing is to engage them and support them where they find it difficult to solve the task given.

This methods of teaching help pupils in diverse ways, and as we speak now it has helped improve the teachers methods of teaching and on the part of pupils too, so many improvement in their learning have taken place. Few significant of the method are noted here:

  • The method makes pupils to work on their own and come out with possible solutions on a given activity.
  • They are able to work within a specific time given, and this really ensures speed work without wasting much time on a given work(_especially, where pupils are to answer questions in examination)
  • The weaker ones in class are able to cope with the talented ones as the method ensures equal participation in class through pairing of pupils.
  • Teachers too benefit from the method, having ample time to engage pupils, relax and monitor as the class becomes busy with full of activities from the pupils.

My small help and support to @steemiteducation project is delegate 100SP. I think as time goes on and my STEEM POWER grows I will be able to delegate more. This is to also seek permission officially to work with you in this community, so please do accept my request and receive me as such.
