Immigration/Emigration/Migration: Do you know the difference?
Many of you might read this heading and think:
"Does she really know what she is talking about? Their is no such thing as emigration."
Well, you see. There is actually a difference between these three, and we tend to use them whenever we want, no matter if that is their correct usage.
Let's start at the most basic word: Migrate
Migrate means moving from one area or a country to settle in another area or country in search of work.

Within migration we have four subtypes of migration
1. Internal Migration
Internal Migration is when people move within a state, country or continent.

2. External Migration
External Migration is when people moves to a different state, country or continent.

3. Return Migration
Return Migration is when people move back to where they came from. They are returning to the country where they came from.

4. Seasonal Migration
Seasonal Migration is exactly what they word says, migrating according to the seasons for work (labour) or climate conditions.

What does emigrate mean?
Even though migrate has four subtypes, emigrate does hav a similar meaning to external migration, but with emigrate people permanent move to another country or continent from his former location. It is important to remember that emigrate is when you leave your current country.

Grammarly has this amazing picture, that according to me, best describes the difference between emigrate and immigrate:

On a personal note
While I have been doing the research on the difference between the three terms we are looking into emigrating to either @teamaustralia or @teamcanada. Yes, you might think:
"Why can't they decide between the two countries?"
You see, we have two reasons for deciding on these two countries and we still need to choose between these two, and we are still gathering all the necessary information:
- To create a better future for our children.
- To enable my husband to change his career from theologist to paleontologist.
Hopefully we will be able to enforce this change within the next four years.

Thank you @tanyaschutte. I had to look up the meaning of the two careers your husband will be swopping. :-)
Wish you well with the research and the decision. I have friends in both countries who emigrated from SA. The ones in Canada seems happier and had an easier time adapting. But the cold is a factor, especially coming from our African climes.
Thank you @reonlouw for reading my post. This is a big decision for us but our familie is coming first in this decision, which is the main reason for the career change. We also have friends in both and the ones in Canada took a while to adapt to the cold but the one in Australia says the key is to have jobs where you are going otherwise it is to difficult to adapt and that is when people come back.
The three terms are quite similar, maybe that's why we use them equally.
Very good information Thank you @tanyaschutte

Wow, just yesterday we had lunch with a grieving couple, as their children with their grandchildren have all emigrated to Australia. We also placed an old lady on a free computer course, as before her son left he bought her a computer, but she was computer illiterate and she couldn't communicate with her son. In fact she stored the computer in her garage, but now, after attending the course, she can talk to him via e-mail and she also types letters for everyone else in the old age home. There are many of us that are either too old, or we don't have the means to leave! In the meantime I have encouraged my own children to leave and it will happen soon. I wish you guys all of the best with your plans! Blessings and upvoted!
Thank you @papilloncharity. My in-laws are all pro for a move and have encouraged the move. I hope it all works out. Thank you for reading, commenting and upvoting.
Much love.
Funny that this comes up... seems like it's used more and more in our vocab as South Africans
I think we use it more but it is an international concept used, I think, not with there correct meanings
