I decided:
Why not make some moon sand and while having a lot of fun, my children's sensory awareness and fine motor muscle skills are still developing.
Moon Sand Recipe and Instructions
You will need the following:
- 8 cups of all purpose flour
- 1 cup of vegetable oil
- Tempera powder paint to color the flour.
Instructions:
- Combine the all purpose flour and the vegetable oil.
- Separate the flour into the amount of different colors you would like to create.
- Now mix half a teaspoon of tempera powder into each group of flour-oil mixture.
- Bag them until your kids want to play.
- HAVE SOME FUN WITH THEM!
Educational Value of moon sand
- Children are exposed to different textures.
- Your children can learn about different colors.
- They develop fine motor skills while shoveling, digging, shifting.
- When they cover their hands/ body (sometimes) they engage their proprioceptive senses.
- When they have to learn words, let them write it in the moon sand. Language Skills are then developed.
- Develop social skills through sharing, problem solving and communicating.
- They develop their imagination. Pack out straws, small pill holders etc and let them have an open ended play.
Remember that kids learn through using their senses. What they see, touch, hear, feel and smell is used to teach, learn and educate.
