Functions of the cardiovascular system
*Transports oxygen and carbon dioxide
*Distributes nutrients
*Transports waste
*Distributes hormones
*Regulates body temperatures

The heart is a specialized muscle, whose function is to circulate the blood through the body. The cardiovascular system has a cardiac cycle which consists of two parts
- Systole: This is where the ventricles contract.
- Diastole: This is where all the heart chambers relax following the contraction of the atria. Here is a short video clip to show you how the cycle works.
Our blood transports nutrients, gasses (oxygen and carbon dioxide), hormones and waste products. It also helps with our immune system.

Arteries have smooth muscles in the walls and it takes blood away from the heart.
Veins have valves, no muscles and takes the blood toward the heart.
