Listening

In learning a new language, one of the hardest tasks is listening. There are lots of reasons that force students about this issue. No matter what their levels are, all students might face with problems. In this post, I would love to give some tips to make this task easier for students. As an English teacher, I try to educate my students in listening activities with the tips that I am going to mention in this post.

First of all, your students must be aware of the fact listening can't be taught like grammar rules. They have to be exposed to language a lot. Exposure to language can happen in every moment of their daily life. It is important to use different sources like youtube, some learning websites and all other apps which allows students to hear different accents. It is the most important part of improving listening skills.

Accents!

Getting used to accents takes time. Therefore, students should try to have access to different accents as much as possible. In addition to this, it is important for teacher to use a proper pronunciation in classes. If a teacher is not good at pronouncing words in the language students are learning, you can't expect students to be good at listening.

In addition to the accent issue, it is important for students to check about some possible unknown words before the listening. If they don't know the meanings of lots of new words in listening records, they can't understand anything at all. Therefore, new learners might have a look at new words before they focus on listening tracks.

Taking notes!

If someone wants to improve listening skills, that person should take lots of notes while listening. I recommend my students to focus on the listening completely. Students usually feel down when they don't understand some sentences repeating each other. However, it is all normal, so there is no need in feeling down when there is something they can't get.

In order to understand better listenings, it is important to take lots of notes. Listening to recordings solely doesn't help students to understand what is mentioned. It is important to write down all words which are emphasized and repeated in listening so that students can visualize what is being mentioned.

Exercise!

The last thing which is important in improving listening skills is to focus on an exercise. This is what we, teachers usually do in classes. When student are not aware of the reason of listening to something, it is hard to achieve something in that listening. It is essential for all language learners to have something to focus on during listening activities.

Like the one I share above, there are various ways that students can do during listening. The most common exercises are usually about some easy questions, putting the events in order or making true-false sentences. These are important exercises to make the listening meaningful and effective for all language learners.

Never-ending!

Learning a language must be a part of our lives. If we want to be better in understanding recordings in a new language, we must take advantages of everything we have in our hands. It is our duty to create awareness among students.
