in #steemitsandwichcontest6 years ago (edited)

Greeting to the great steemit community!
Here we go with another start of a new week of ssc, today's sandwich I'll be making is an idea suggested by @carolynstahl! For those who are not familiar with her, I would all of you to checkout her amazing blog. If you are a vegetarian, you will love her even more! She has amazing photography skills, which compliment her already beautiful plating design. Not to say only has great food photo but she does a lot more photo taking others then food. If photo is not your thing, ( which is rare) you should still read her blog as she really does have a lot of interesting story to share with! Well I feel like I am promoting her blog instead of making sandwich, so I better get into showing my sandwich to all of you! But seriously, do checkout her blog @carolynstahl.

I present to you: cabbage roll

Mixed mushrooms and root vegetables

Okay, first of all I know it looks not as exciting as @carolynstahl mother in law's cabbage roll, but I am pretty sure carolynstahl would enjoyed it :). Btw this is the blog about the cabbage roll her mother in law made, highly recommend to checkout, very interesting and funny! https://steemit.com/vegan/@carolynstahl/vegan-mother-s-day-cabbage-rolls
Anyway this cabbage roll was suggested by Carolyn, she gave me the idea of putting a little Asian twist to it so I came up with this.

what's inside?

Osyter mushroom, shiitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, jicama, carrot, cabbage, onions and Spring onion

You may ask what's with all those mushrooms, well I strongly believe that mushrooms are the meat in the vegetarian world! It gives crazy umami fancy way of saying savoury taste to a dish. Apart from that, it has a really unique bouncy texture no other food can give.

how's it's done?

Sometimes it's always good to cut back on oil, so In order to make it taste good I decided to braised my vegetables and fungus. Firstly to breakdown the sugar in the vegetable, secondly to let the flavours compounds mingle around creating a much more complex flavour, lastly to cut down the use of oil.

Anyway what really makes it qualify as a Asian dish is its seasoning, I used soy sauce and some Chinese rice wine. I did not go crazy on the braising liquid because I want the flavour of the vegetable and fungus to standout. Cooking in a stronger flavour braising liquid will just overpower the main ingredients' flavour. At the very end of the braising, I strained the vegetable and mushrooms reserving the flavourful braising liquid to make the soon to be sauce for the cabbage roll. I simple thicken it with corn starch and we have a sweet, salty, mushroomy soy sauce.

I also put the cabbage with the braising vege and mushroom close to the end of the cooking process to make it more pliable. Wrap the fillings with the cabbage and spoon the sauce over and we are good to go

walla, final product

That all I have for now! Thanks all!

Epic my man! Glad that people seem to be mingling as much as they are these days. There's been a good amount of cross inspiration among the participants recently, which has been absolutely great to see!

This roll must have been amazing!

Diggin' the mushrooms and the cutting down of oil use. Always great to try new things right!?

BTW...jicama what is that... A root veggie?

Well, it's the Internet, it's a whole new way for getting to know people from different countries, different culture. Plus it's always nice to get ideas from other than to break your head thinking of what to make.

Different people have different reason why they are vegetarian, some are vegetarian mainly because the want a healthier diet thus cutting down oil. Yes it's fun trying new things, at least for me.

Jicama is a root veggie, it's like a root that looks like a ball. It have a texture of a pear, it's sweet and juice.

Ya for sure. Steemit has been great for meeting ppl from all over!

And interesting, that root veggies sounds tasty !

agree! Including with those who have the right intension

Oh my god I was hoping you would do it. You really made one that I want to eat. Asian style with some great tastes.

I appreciate the shout out so much. Thanks for your support!
