Two small suggestions for Steem-Monsters (market improvements)

in #steemmonsters5 years ago

Is there anyone on this chain that doesn't know of Steem-Monsters? Probably not, and as far as blockchain games go, it is by far and away THE BEST game out there. Granted, my experience of blockchain games has been so far limited to EOS Knights, which I have to say gets stomped on by by Steem-Monsters (You can read my review of EOS Knights here).

However, I have a couple (One minor and one major) of tiny little suggestions that might or might not be noticed or of some help to the developers. Little things that might improve the quality of life for the players that are completely devoted to the game!

Please also note that I'm only a long time gamer and a tech nerd, I am not a programmer, and so it is quite possible that the suggestions that I'm making are much more difficult that I could ever imagine!

Minimum Price on Sell option

My first suggestion (and the more minor one) is a small User Interface tweak. A good chunk of the Steem-Monsters experience is the selling and buying of cards, the wheeling and dealing of converting cards to STEEM and back again to strengthen your packs. However, there is a small annoyance when you are selling the card, namely, you can't see the going price of the card that you are trying to sell!

Now, this is a little problem, as you can always have one web tab open on the Collections (selling) page and another on the Market (prices) page, but it would be a little quality of life concession if the current minimum price of the card that you are selling is listed next to the price entry field!

Tiny improvement, with a huge quality of experience gain!

Card Burn?

The second suggestion is a much more involved one. We are seeing a huge glut in some of the Reward cards with the prices having crashed all the way down to 0.02 USD (I'm assuming the price is not lower due to a hard coded minimum sell price!). Given that there is a difficulty in setting a real marketplace (with buy orders, due to the problem of wallet authorisation) to aid in price discovery, there is the danger that over a long period of time that cards will trend lower and lower (like the collecting cards on the Steam game platform).

I would like to offer a suggestion that a sort of a card burn is looked at. That perhaps there is an option to burn a card (destroy and remove from circulation) for a token 0.01 USD. So, you would not make more than selling it... in fact, you would make less! Given the huge glut of the 0.02 cent Reward cards, I'm would think that a chunk of players would take this option instead of having their cards sit on the marketplace for eternity. This would also be a less draconian way of removing the cards from circulation instead of re-jigging the drop rate and potentially shifting the same problem to other cards.

Of course, this would bring into question the problem of funding this buy back (burn), which would have to be funded from the @steemmonsters account. This could be alleviated by having a daily limit of burns (which would limit the devastation on the @steemmonsters wallet!). However, if you take a long-term view... the burning of these cards would mean that players would have more funds to spend on the cards that they actually want... rather than thousands of cards sitting in limbo, unwanted and unbought.

It would reduce the disheartening effect of flipping open a card and seeing another useless card that you can't use and you can't sell. At the moment, I think (I have no data to back up this claim) that the glut cards are only being bought (if at all) by new players... this isn't a sustainable model. It is a bit of a time-bomb that will slowly turn players off the game (You can see similar glut problems in EOS Knights).

Anyway, that is my two cents worth... maybe it is ideas that @yabapmatt and @aggroed have already thought about.. and plan to implement or have discarded due to problems that I have not been able to see. Anyway, just putting the ideas out there!

Nice post and I think the first idea is a really great one. I think the second one like you said is much more difficult. There are a lot of factors that have to be considered including the fact that given there are fixed number of cards available if someone chooses to burn one or accidentally burns one, you might not be able to upgrade a card that you want to. I think they would have to set a limit to ensure all cards could be fully upgraded at some point. Also, they are adding new abilities to cards all the time so where the grumpy dwarf might have been burned off before he is now much more powerful with the addition of "reach". Those cards that people are throwing away now could be very desirable in the future.

I don't know... even with the way things are now... there is no guarantee that each card could be paired up in a way that they would be fully powered up? Plus, there is only so far they can go with adding new abilities before it devalues others too much or becomes a bit ludicrous to keep track of (keeping in mind that it is a casual game and not a hardcore strategy game!).

The burning would be an option... it isn't neccessary for people to take it, but it would go some way to reducing the glut. I think the glut is more demoralising to the economy and players at the moment?

My heart sinks when I see 'Vampire' in my reward cards. I dumped a load at $0.01 a few days back. That's a 50% reduction on the going price of $0.02.

They went like hot cakes.. yes really!

Yup... that 2 cent barrier is not going to break without some serious intervention. This is a touch of market failure.

Both seem good ideas to me, to be honest I havent done much selling even though i have quite a few I would consider selling, but havign to go to the market and see what price they are selling for them coming back to sell has put me of f doing that

Yes, this is a minor issue, but it does put people off... Especially on mobile! I hope they are able to fix that!

That should be an easy fix I would think
