The Pirate Captain surveyed the expanse of the subdued sea.

He knew it wouldn’t be calm for long, as the onslaught would soon begin. As his crew rustled nervously behind him, the Captain wondered what sorts of magic, devilry and monsters dwelled beneath the surface of the water. He and his crew would find out firsthand before nightfall.

This is where they would come, and the Pirate Captain knew it. His crew had hiked the perimeter of the island and confirmed that this was the only beach. The only point of entry. This was the very beach upon which the Pirate Ship had landed just days before, laying siege and ultimately defeating the massive Crustacean King and his army. His crew had fought bravely, and many of his best were lost in the siege. After taking a moment for his fallen mates, the Pirate Captain turned to his crew and began to shout.

“Remember, mates! In a world of ever-battling monsters, we can find strength in our numbers! As long as we be a crew and there be wind in our sails, we can fight! And we can WIN!” The Pirate Captain’s last word was met with a sweeping cheer that seemed to have emanated from a thousand men and not a mere thirty. Led by their fearless Captain, this pirate crew had courage beyond their power, and this courage often pulled them through the bleakest times.

The Captain watched the subtle waves dancing across the water, and he thought about the cave at the center of the island that he and his men had discovered. It was a deep cave; dark, wet, and crawling with small monsters, but he and his mates had persevered to its heart, discovering the pearl in this island’s oyster. A treasure, in its resting place of a thousand years. A treasure of treasures, too heavy to fit on the boat, and too valuable to sell in all the markets of the world. The treasure was the plunder of a lifetime. But there had been a guard.

Little had the Pirate Captain known...

that in somewhere in the deep, dark of the treasure cave waited a Water Elemental.
Perhaps the Elemental would have been the match for the Pirate Captain, but it wasn’t there to fight. It was merely a sentinel, and after cackling at the Pirates, it simply vanished into one of the submerged cracks in the bottom of the cave. The Captain knew that the Water Elemental had gone to the sea to rouse the true protectors of the Pearl Treasure.

The Pirate Captain was startled back into the moment when he noticed a strange ripple on the water, a few hundred yards out. It was coming toward them. He didn’t need to investigate further; it was time. The Captain had heard it told that the monsters of the sea could be a hundred times bigger than the monsters of the land. More curious than afraid, and prepared to die for the Pearl Treasure, he turned to his crew.

I don’t know what’s going to come out of that water, but it’s gonna be big! Prepare yeselves! We may be small, but we’re clever! Look for weaknesses, mates! Improvise, and do what you do best! Survive!” The uproarious cheer from the mates was somehow louder than before. As the ripple in the water drew closer with each moment, one of the pirates in back began to sing. Everyone joined the song.

Yo ho ho in the sand and mud
Soon we spill some monster blood
Yo ho under the evening sky
We hold strong or else we die
Yo ho kings of the open sea
A pirate’s life and death for me.

As the song ended, the Pirate Captain felt a power he had never felt before, and his mates shared the feeling. Every one of the Pirate Crew was prepared to perish defending the Pearl Treasure against the monsters of the deep, and live or die, this would be the greatest moment of their lives. The Pirate Captain took a deep breath as a huge dark shape began to emerge from the water, close to the shore.

The battle had begun.

The End.

I see you flex your storytelling muscles as well in writing as you do in broadcasting and produce resounding punches, no matter the medium they land in ;-) Beware, Steem Monsters! The Mighty Roberts is set loose and will change your world!

Thanks, @chrisroberts, that was a great read ;-)

Really appreciate that @zyx066! :D Way to inflate my ego... hehehe.

I love writing. So far I'm really enjoying the creative potential that #steemmonsters offers. I love how they left most everything open, literature-wise. That way I can change their world, as you say.

What a cool idea turning STeem Monsters into a story

Yeah, well... it's pretty much all I've been thinking about, so... ;)
Lots of folks are doing it. I want to be as much of a part of the creation of the Steem Monsters world as possible. Great creative exercise too. I've already got the characters, just need to stick 'em in some situations and throw in some descriptive imagery. :D

And you did it so well, this is so well done love your creativity in story telling
