The new Steem Monster packs will shake up the market and the game//

Steem Monsters have already announced a completely new batch of cards. After the Beta packs are all sold out we will be seeing a whole new group of cards and Beta cards will only ever be able to be purchased on the market.

Usually when big changes like this happen in other card games like Hearthstone they always retire some cards and do extensive balancing, something Steem Monsters might need as well.

The game, even right now isnt really well balanced and its hard to expect it will ever be, which is one of the reasons why we have so many game modes. New cards introduced over time changed what is of value and what is not.

A good example would be the "FROST GIANT" and "RULER OF THE SEAS".

At the start Frost giant was a semi-decent card but over time it turned into a Trash tier card while Ruler of the Seas is used almost exclusively in most of the Water Splinter decks. The only reason the Frost Giant has any value right now is because of being a legendary card that can be dusted for some DEC..

New cards by themselves re-balance the game and change card prices and values.
Price is under great influence by the cards usability in-game.

Once the new cards launch, after a week or two the whole market will slowly start adjusting to the new state of things.
Those cards that you payed for greatly might not be worth "anything" anymore. They could be replaced by cheaper cards of similar or the same utility. Some cards that arent that great now might become good again. (I doubt that for the poor Frost Giant, lol)

I have been involved into every pre-sale Steem Monsters had but unfortunately i will not be buying any "Untamed" cards due to this bear market and how expensive cards are in comparison to STEEM.
I will be paying attention to the market though because its extremely interesting to see it all unfold. By having some insight into the game you can make a good call and get a nice ROI.

A good example is "Lord Arianthus"

Couple months ago he used to go for about 2$ and now hes selling for 10$.
Huge potential for a good return there.
It does take some time to get to know the game but there is one thing exciting in that over the crypto market if youre a speculator.
You have something solid to base your purchase on.
In the crypto market how solid a crypto project is doesnt really matter to speculators that run the market, but here, how good a card is does affect its value so you can have some certainty when it comes to pinpointing undervalued cards.
And thats a huge deal.

....anyways... some thoughts as always.
Ill see you around

I think they are well aware of these issues of balance and after hearing some of the discussion the founders have had on some podcasts, they stated that they intend to continue expanding what we can do with cards which will probably make cards either useful for battles or another mechanic like farming materials they said. Encouraging to say the least in that all cards will have a reason to be held and hold their value.

farming materials.

Hmm. Thats interesting.

Ive seen some mmos have similar mechanics for their companions.

I'm discovering there are lots of corner cases for various cards like the frost giant, particularly a big mana, reverse speed scenario. Though he also 'slows' down your opponent. I've been buying lots of beta packs because I like the project, but I'll probably resort to trading for new cards that I like instead of buying packs going forward.

One great thing about the whole endeavor, is that you can buy packs directly with fiat via paypal (at least in the US), and I've been able to splash a lot of STEEM into my wallet through that means instead of through an exchange. Assuming STEEM price recovers to even recent highs, my experiment will at least pay for itself.

Sure. There are some cases like reverse speed but even then he still loses against a full caster water splinter with ruler of the sea.
Some cards are just too fringe and underpowered.
The devs have the stats that would show win ratea etc. But im sure they dont want to do on the spot balancing and mess with card prices so directly and so often.

Hmm. So you would buy packs and then sell the cards?
How has that been going for you vs paying an exchange?

Been keeping a spreadsheet and it's roughly a 30% haircut at current open market prices. I also am trying to accumulate bitcoin and ethereum, and this allows me to keep that effort totally separate. At the same time, buying 110 packs at a time with fiat is something I can do here and there. I'm a fan of non-traditional fiat onboarding mechanisms.

I have mixed feelings about them messing with cards power. What if they nerf the crap out of Lord Arianthus causing his value to go from $10 to $1. It's also going to be interesting to see what "inside" information people will have if they do make buffs on cards to see if those prices start to increase before the news is announced and the change is made.

I'm ok with cards becoming weak and some cards becoming more powerful and popular after they are released and people determine what is the best strategy. That's the risk you take when investing in individual cards.

I'm sure not everyone will agree with my thoughts, but that's ok.

Thats exactly why they are reluctant to do it.
Still. Some cards are in dire need of buffs.
What i think they will do is attempt balancing via release of new cards.

Fire splinter is another example. The mid league potential of the fire splinter is terrible. By far the worst splinter.
The healer they added was i think a way to change that. (Will have to see how that goes)
Fire went to shit when they tampered with stats of serpentine soldier and added ruler of the seas.
So maybe its better to balance via new cards.

That might be better for the game but cards like Frost Giant still remain really bad.

Id maybe avoid nerfs but try boosts of cheaper cards. That way people wont be dissapointed and it doesnt really change the price much.

Will be interesting to follow this token industry when it comes to games, I'm waiting for this game to become easy available in the phone like EOS Dynasty, that seems to have a recent up-swing in success in their developed app, went from 100 EOS in reward to 248 EOS. Daily divs for games like this is gold. Be a stake owner in the game.

Im not familiar with that game since i rarely venture outside Steem. I do think gaming has a huge potential in crypto which we will see over time hopefully.

Id like to see a Steem "candy crush" game. lol.
It could work with a good market and it would be a game with broad appeal thats easy to get into.
