While many around the community have been watching the markets and concerned about the future of blockchain technology, the great development of our favorite #STEEM based game, @steemmonsters has continued. It has been a great distraction to grind for daily quests and try new teams while waiting for the new season to start with its changes. It has also been over a week since Season 2 was over so we have had time to level up some cards given the rewards received from the Season 2 success.

Season 2 was an interesting season as it experimented with the introduction of bots for the first time. Given the conflict rules based system deployed by the game, it was easy to created teams and let bots fight them over and over again. So easy, in fact, that some accounts were created solely to battle with these bots which would use the same cards amongst the accounts to “farm” for booster beta packs once achieving the Division needed to get the most possible. This did not really impact the lower levels of battling but once Diamond Division was entered, it was difficult not to encounter a bot. In fact, I had to battle with the number ranked player which I assumed was a bot, a number of times.

It was an unfortunate situation as it did take out some of the excitement of watching the game in its totality as you would automatically know the outcome when facing an opponent with a 20k score. It also made the achievement of daily quests more difficult once entering the Diamond Division. However, as we have come to be accustomed to, the great development team worked on some tweaks during the season to improve the experience for the players. They instituted cooldowns for cards transferred between accounts in order to reduce the amount of accounts being able to use the same cards to get to the maximum ranks for free booster packs. They also changed some of the matchmaking so that Diamond Division players will only play with players in that division and even when in Champions division, you will be matched with similar ranked players which reduced the possibility of facing the bots for the rest of the season. Once those changes were made, the impacts were felt immediately as I experienced much better competitive matches which also allowed me to rank into the Champions Division for the first time.

Having achieved over 4,200 ranked points was quite a grind but was also very fund to play through as once the bots were out of the equation, the battle were much more competitive. I watched many battles between similar teams but with different outcomes which were interesting to see as it demonstrates the randomness of some abilities in the game and its impact to the results. The continuing cycles of rule changes, or conflicts, have continued to make the game more strategic than I would have originally thought. It has also led for me to pay more attention to specific cards that I feel add some depth and flexibility to teams when battling. For example, I have taken advantage of the free beta booster packs from the daily quests to level up all of the neutral splinter monsters available as they can play with any Splinter unless restricted due to rules. The result of season 2 allowed me to get 25 free Beta booster packs having finished only one division short of getting to the highest Champions Division.

Unfortunately, the cards from those packs were not as exciting as previous packs I have opened but the fact that I was able to add to my collection at no cost is great for a game as enjoyable as @steemmonsters. This will continue to be the key to remaining competitive as future seasons are deployed. The end of season two also brought a delay to the start of season 3 given some additional changes the developers wanted to implement to further balance the game and improve the player experience. The development team detailed changes coming to the game that are pretty significant considering how we have been used to battling until now. In addition to continuing the changes made in season 2, they have reworked the battling system in that you will now choose your team after matching with your opponent instead of before. Now, you will also see who you are matched against and the previous five teams they have used before choosing your team. In addition, the rules, previously conflicts, will now change between every battle! This adds additional strategy in every game in an effort to be more hands on and also minimizing the ability for bots to overtake leaderboards.

We just heard today that Season 3 will start tomorrow, Monday November 26th. In confirming the battle changes, they also mentioned that all ranks and divisions will now be reset to zero which means that the battle to the higher divisions will require more time to play relative to the experience in season two where you started the closer to the Division you ended with the previous season. This and the battle mechanics changes will surely make for a more engaging season! This will also bring adjustments to those only playing for the daily quests as using the same Splinter or team will not be as easy this time around given that your opponent will know your last team giving them an opportunity to place a counter team for the battle. It will be interesting to see how these dynamics change the player experience and engagement this season!

If these changes were not enough to keep us engaged, the @steemmonsters team also recently announced an amazing opportunity for those looking to increase the value of their accounts here on the #STEEM ecosystem! Now, with every purchase of the available Beta booster packs, you will receive 10% of the purchase back in Steem Power! This is a great opportunity for a lot of the newer accounts that have come to experience the @steemmonsters game to grow their accounts and their future in this growing ecosystem. It is also a great way for new users to start building their resource credits which are needed to play the game and engage around the platform. This continues to demonstrate the commitment of the @steemmonsters team to help the overall ecosystem grow and provide the community the means and support to engaged with others. The project continues to be an example for all future projects looking to build on this great #STEEM blockchain.

Nice! Wow, 25 packs is a great reward and if you consider the daily quests that provide an additional packs, you can sure get a good number of cards to add to the collection.

I am looking forward to the new season, I just wish steem would go up in price so I could buy more cards! lol

Will be interesting to see the rewards structure in the new season and if putting all that effort into going up into higher leagues is worth it or if most will just stick to the daily quests.

At least we have something to do while the market stabilizes! I think they will continue to make rewards interesting as they want as many people playing to keep up engagement and new players coming in.

That’s sick the new season starts tomorrow! It’s going to be my first season participating so I’m excited!

Spent the last 2 weeks getting adjusted to the game and doing daily’s so hopefully I can get to champion!

It is going to be quite an experience given the changes they put in place. I just hope we get some diversity in the matchmaking as I ran into the same players many times last season.

This season will be the first one I will be playing! Curious how this will go.
Started with playing steemmonsters last week, and I am now focusing on the daily quest. Guess that will change with the start of the new league!
See you at the battlefield :)
Cheers,
Peter

Awesome! Look forward to reading your thoughts on the game! It is quite fun and engaging!

I think you have pretty much all of the new info in this post here. I for one am a big fan of the new changes. I play every day to win my booster packs and move up the league which used to be very easy.

It's great that it has become a challenge rather than just hitting battle repeatedly until you get there. It only takes 5 wins now but unless you look at what you are doing and put it together properly then you won't win. A challenging game is a better game when it makes you think and makes you determined to get those wins. It's even more addictive now that it takes more effort.

I agree! It has definitely felt different but in a good way that requires attention and engagement.
