The first week of Season three is almost over and the new mechanics have truly brought a higher level of engagement as expected. The matchmaking also seems to have increased the amount of competitiveness the players are experiencing quite dramatically. This could also be due to the fact that many players have acquired a good amount of cards to be competitive with in the lower Division due to the daily quests as well as the prior season Division rewards. Lastly, everyone was reset to zero ranking points so a larger population has been battling to climb the leaderboard this week. This has made everyone start without being able to use their higher leveled cards. This changes the experience and some cards known to be powerful are less so without having their abilities available at lower levels.

I have experienced more difficult matches which have left me still in only the Bronze Division after reaching Champions Division last season and during the time leading up to Season three. My week was also a little busy as I was traveling so my time was limited to playing towards the daily quests every day. Given the new battling system, it takes some more time to sit and battle out the game in order to climb the ladder. Whereas in prior seasons, it was as easy as picking one team for every daily quest, we now find ourselves setting up different teams in between almost every battle. However, two additional features or changes added this season is that daily quests now require 5 wins instead of 10 wins to claim a free booster pack. In addition, you also have the option to change the daily quest in case you struggle finding a team that could provide wins for said Splinter.

The longer times have to do with the fact that every battle also changes the rules or limitation of the game you have been matched with. So not only does the mana cap change between every game but there are different rules (previously called “conflicts”) as well. For example, we could have a 20 mana cap with no restrictions one game and the next game could be a 18 mana cap, limit a certain splinter in addition to applying rules like no legendaries. This adds an additional level of complexity just to play the game. It also adds a deeper need for being strategic in between every match to achieve a competitive advantage.

It would be a good idea to carefully review the information provided at the matchmaking screen before entering into your team selection. For example, if you see your opponent has been using a single splinter consistently (most likely due to the daily quest), think about a splinter that can provide a team that could counter it and get an upper hand. Another tip is to leverage the special abilities that the Summoner provide that may help according to the rule set. An example of this is when magic is weakened and requires to go through armor before hitting health. This would be a good time to use the Life Splinter which provides you with additional armor to protect your monsters. There are so many combinations being seen that it takes some time to seen what works and what does not. A great way to learn this is by watching the matches to their completion instead of skipping to results as this provides you a way to see how the rules impact the cards being played which can help determine what adjustments are needed for future battles.

Given that there is only a week left to the end of the season, I decided to take some time to focus on climbing the leaderboard today. It has been an interesting experience as it is more difficult to achieve win streak than it has previously been. The most difficult adjustment for me has been dealing with cards that have yet to unlock their abilities. You come to realize the importance of the abilities as you do not have them at lower levels. Given these factors, the journey to climb the leaderboard is much slower. I think these are good adjustments as it makes the higher levels more special and worthy of the number of rewards being provided. The amount of packs distributed last season was very high given the bots that had been created as well as how easy it was to play plenty of game with little effort or strategy. The result so far is me just breaking into the Silver Division which is good as it raises the level of my cards and enables a number of cards to now have their abilities available. I will continue to play throughout the week to get as high as I can on the leaderboards.

Another milestone for me this week was receiving my first affiliation rewards from @steemmonsters! It was completely unexpected but I was honored to see that I have had the impact to someone to try out this great game. In addition, he has been quite active playing and engaging throughout the community so it comes to show the ability this game has had to expand the engagement of users in the ecosystem. The way that the development team has approach the community in fostering growth in the game and the ecosystem continues to encourage me that the #STEEM ecosystem has substantial value to create going forward despite the recent concerns both here and elsewhere in the blockchain community.

I would like to also add to this motivation and encouragement to the community. I would like to get ideas from the community on how I could help those that want to start playing @steemmonsters. I have thought of a numbers of ideas like sponsoring a @steembasicincome share or providing small SP delegations to allow more ability to engage and play. I would love to know your thoughts so that this could help grow the community trying the game by using my affiliate link. Let me know in the comments below!

This game is so addictive and now with the level of detail added it is even more so! I think SBIs are pretty attractive given that they help with every post.

Gosh, you've played so many more games than me! I think I missed the entire second season.

Once I start playing, I can be on for an hour or two which is needed this season given the changes!
