"Fire Beetle?" Gary scoffed.

The goblin tossed the hand bound journal to the side. Not even bothering to open it. Nathaniel Flameheart snatched it out of the air, nearly diving off his seat. He clutched it tighter as he eyed the ground. The Zepplin's floor was covered in food and the blood of small animals, which were food for some of the airship's patrons.
The goblin cackled as he stood on his seat, nearly eye level with Nathaniel. "Don't break your neck over superstitious literature mate."
Nathaniel pursed his lips as he stared at the blood red ink on the cover.

Et Cordis De Tracker.

Gary gave a small grunt. "No witty comeback? This book must mean a lot to you."
Nathaniel gave a sigh. "It's just a book." He lied as he covered up his father's name on the corner.
His fingers cracked open the pages. "We should be there before sundown, perfect timing really. We should see them better at night."
His green skinned companion squinted. "You're telling me there are bugs, that are literally named after fire for what reason I do not want to know and we are going there?"
"Well we have to start somewhere to build up my credibility as a Tracker."
The Goblin waved his hand. "Wait wait. You're telling me the creatures you told stories about at the tavern are real?"
Gary leaned back into his seat, the clanking of gears echoed as the Zepplin started to descend. "I used to feed your stories to customers so they would buy more grog and smokes. I thought I was helping a silver tonged conman." He kept mouthing goblin words or 'black speak' to himself.
"Kid I knew you had some magic abilities and a messed up face but I figured you were a cheap magician who got whooped as a pup. Monster hunter, nary a dream."
Nathaniel gave a smile and absentmindedly felt the scars that streaked across his face. He glanced at his friend and showed him the name on the book.
Tiberius L Flameheart.
And laid the journal in his friend's lap. "Don't judge books by their cover mate. Pages can hide a lot of secrets."

The next leg of the trip was pleasantly quiet the duo walked across the desert of the Burning Sands. Their only light was the full moon. Nathaniel dragged a large mechanical contraption and rested his hands. Gary sat in stunned silence afraid to ask more about the future plan for catching these 'fire beetles'.
Nathaniel skimmed though the book trying to see what other valuable monsters was in the Burning Lands. Using the moonlight to read.
"So these beetles, are they bright red or-."
"They emit fire." He casually flipped another page.
The goblin's eyes grew as big as an Orc's.
"They. Emit. Fire."
Nathaniel cracked a small smile. "Partly why they are worth tons on the black market. Dead or Alive. Fire Beetles spew fire out of their carapace to fend off predators. Barbarians of the burning lands often bait their rivals camps to draw in whole swarms. You will find random ash moutains across the desert where these attacks happened. And if you find a dead Fire Beetle, well you just found dragon fire proof armor. " His voice quickly fell to a course whisper as he pointed. "Look."
The Goblin climbed onto his shoulder and peered into the darkness of the desert. Amidst the white sands was small orbs of fire wrapped in large groups. "It's mating season, bigger fire, bigger beetle. Ladies love the big ones."
Gary whispered. "How big are these things?"
Nathaniel shrugged, lifting the Goblin a few inches. "Enough to make shields and full armor suits out of."
Rumbling echoed beside them as Nathaniel dropped to his knee. He gave a soft hum. His hand glowed as a series of fiery sparks grew. They danced in the air and drifted to the metal contraption he had drug across the desert.
"So why are we catching them, for their armor?"
Nathaniel smiled. The metal popped and groaned as it stretched. A gigantic metal hand slapped the earth, as the creature rose towering over them. A collective buzzing echoed. Across the sands the fire grew closer.
"They are territorial during mating season aren't they?"
Nathaniel waved his hand as the Pyrochanic Golem stumbled forwards. "That's the rumor." Fireballs lit up the night as buzzing clicking and echoing deafened them.
Nathaniel crossed his legs in the sand. "Watch my back."
The flames pounded the Golem. Metallic webbing springing from his hands. Nathaniel grunted phsycially flinching as the fireballs hit the automaton. The flames started to weaken as the Golem grew faster and hit harder as it fed off the erngy of the flames. The sound of metal diving into the sand grew faster.
Nathaniel keeled over, sweat dripping down his face, skin warm to the touch, burns covering his hands. Gary poured water from their canteen over him as steam rose. He watched the desert, as far as the eye could see, giant crude metallic staples pinned the beetles to the ground. The more they struggled and spewed fire the more the cages grew around.
"You asked why are we catching them."
Nathaniel rolled over weakly.
"Because my friend. Fire Beetles like fire can be tamed."

Great story, reads well and contains background for the cards. I think the stories could become as popular as the card game, the building of the lore of the game. The electronic version of Dungeons and Dragons first table top board game.

Congratulations on being selected as a runner up, I enjoyed the story, and also are congrats due for becoming a collaborative writer team member for steemmonsters?
