Getting ready to rumble... SteemMonsters - Exploring water element
Fair warning: I have never played any card game like SteemMonsters.
I really have no clue how this will all play out.
I have read quite a few @SteemMonster posts and watched a few videos.
Do not take what I'm about to share as advice. haha
Random things I've learned
Getting ready for the start of gameplay on October 14, 2018...
Please read this official primer of gameplay mechanics.
- You get started by purchasing a Starter Set.
- Current cost is $10
- This gets you 30 random Beta cards.
- You can pay by Credit card, Paypal, or Crypto.
- If you are new to Steem, you get a free Steem account, set up with minimal RCs, but enough for SteemMonster gameplay. If this is you, you may want to purchase additional Steem Power, so you will have more RCs...
- Current cost is $10
- You can get additional cards.
- Purchase 5 card game packs.
- Purchase individual cards from the Market.
- Win cards by entering contests.
- You cannot combine alpha and beta cards.
- To use dragons, you need Selena Sky.
- Bummer, because I have a Lightning Dragon.
- Bummer, because I have a Lightning Dragon.
- According to most gameplay test the life element is the strongest.
- Summoners can only call up monsters from the same element.
- Plus the new Neutral monsters released with the Beta cards.
- Leveling up does not change the mana. (top left number)
Putting together my team
The first player of your team is the summoner.
I have chosen to use Arlic Stormbringer. |
---|
I am WizarDave and we might be cousins. haha
That's the only reason I chose him.
- This locks me into the water element.
- Arlic gives a +1 to all your magic attacks.
If you log into https://steemmonsters.com/,
then click on Collection, you will see all your cards.
- If you click on a card, you get a popup window showing you the cards you have.
- This is where you can combine cards to level up.
- NOTE: There are Alpha and Beta cards.
Clicking either of these shows your Alpha or Beta cards...
- NOTE: There are Alpha and Beta cards.
- This is where you can combine cards to level up.
- If you click on stats, you will see (obviously) stats about your cards according to the different levels they can be.
- Here is Arlic Stormbringer stats...
- My Arlic is a Level 2 (I combined 2 level 1's to create a level 2...),
- so he can summon
- Level 3 common cards
- Level 2 Rare and Epic cards
- Level 1 Legendary cards.
- Here is Arlic Stormbringer stats...
One thing I do not know is can he call a Level 10 common card, which will play as a Level 3.
If not, we'll have to be very careful when combining and leveling up cards.
If your monster got too high of a level, you would either have to level up your summoner or wait until he levels up through gameplay.
Disregard... @mattclarke clarified with a comment
Summoners can bring in any level card, but those cards will only perform at the level the summoner can manage.
To maximize my options I went on the market to purchase cards I did not have and to purchase cards to level up cards I did have to the max level Arlic can summon as a level 2 summoner.
Level 3 common water element cards
Level 2 rare water element cards
Level 2 Epic water element cards
Level 1 Legendary water element card
As you can see there are a lot of options when putting together a water element team.
15 mana limit teams
It's been announced the first games will be played with only 15 mana limits.
- They will also have other limits, so you will need to think on your feet to develop a team for those levels.
Arlic is 3 mana, so that leaves you with (15-3) 12 mana for monsters...
Rules to be aware of:
- Melee attacks are only from the first slot,
- unless they have sneak attack, then they can be anywhere.
- Ranged attacks are from anywhere EXCEPT the first slot.
- Be aware, if you put them in slot 2 and your slot 1 guy gets killed, they will move up to slot 1 and be unable to attack. They will simply be attacked until they are killed.
- Magic attacks are from anywhere!
Special abilities of water element cards
Pirate Captain = snipe
- He will attack the first monster on the other team with Ranged or Magic attack.
Sabre Shark = Sneak
- He will attack the last Monster of the opposing team.
Crustacean King = Group Heal
- Restores a portion of your team's health at the beginning of each round.
- And by going up to level 3 it gained a ranged attack.
Frozen Soldier & Frost Giant = Shield
- They take reduced damage from Melee and Ranged attacks.
Water Elemental = Heal
- A portion of their health is restored at the beginning of each round.
Naga Warrior = Retaliate
- When hit with a melee attack, she will have a change at a melee attack back at the attacker.
Using the Legendary Frost Giant
He has the greatest attack at 4 melee.
He has good health at 9.
- Tied with Frozen Soldier (4 health + 5 shield)
- Slightly behind Spineback Turtle (7 health + 3 shield)
You would want him in your first slot.
He is 8 mana, so that leaves (12-8) 4
The 4 mana cards are:
- Spineback Turtle
- he would not be attacking from slot 2, but would step up to attack if your Frost Giant got killed.
- Medusa
- She would be able to attack from slot 2, since she has a magic attack.
- Her magic attack would be 2 (1 + 1 bonus from Arlic)
- She would be able to attack from slot 2, since she has a magic attack.
You could also use 4 mana Neutral Monsters
- Centaur =
- 1 Ranged attack, Speed =3, Health = 4
- Snipe
- Grumpy Dwarf =
- 1 melee attack, 2 speed, 4 health + 1 shield
You could also use 3 mana cards:
- Pirate Captain = snipe
- +2 ranged attack, 3 speed, 3 health
- Sabre Shark = sneak
- +2 melee attack, 5 speed, 4 health
- Crustacean King = Group Heal
- +1 ranged, 1 speed, 3 health + 1 shield
You could use 3 mana Neutral cards:
- Enchanted Pixie = Flying
- +2 magic (1 + 1 bonus from Arlic), 2 speed, 1 health.
- Mine is sitting at 75 of 100XP, so if I play her some, I might get her leveled up...
- +2 magic (1 + 1 bonus from Arlic), 2 speed, 1 health.
I would like to try Arlic, Frost Giant & Enchanted Pixie, in hopes of getting her leveled up.
I also like Arlic, Frost Giant & Crustacean King due to the group health restore.
I hopefully will get to try out all these combinations.
Using 6 mana monsters
Frozen Soldier & Mischievous Mermaid both use 6 mana.
I also have the 6 mana Neutral Cyclops monster with 2 ranged attack, 1 speed and 6 health.
- Any of those combinations might work well.
- Frozen Soldier would have to be slot 1 since he has melee attack.
If Cyclops was #2, then the game would be over if Frozen Soldier got killed. (Ranged attacks do not work from slot 1)- Therefore, probably the best combination would be Frozen Soldier & Mischievous Mermaid.
- Frozen Soldier would have to be slot 1 since he has melee attack.
- I could play them with 2 x 3 mana monsters.
Using 5 mana monsters
Leaves 7 which would be any combination of a 3 and a 4 mana Monster.
- Naga Warrior + Medusa + Crustacean King might be powerful.
- A total of +6 attack with Group Heal!
Using 4 mana monsters
I could use any 3 x 4 mana monsters.
- Spineback Turtle + Medusa + Crustacean King might be powerful.
- A total of +4 attack with Group Heal!
Using 3 mana monsters
I could use 4 x 3 mana monsters.
- Sabre Shark + Pirate Captain + Enchanted Pixie + Crustacean King might be powerful.
- A total of +7 attack with group heal!
Conclusion
As you can see, there are a lot of ways to put together a team.
A lot to think about.
A lot to learn.
I am looking forward to doing battle starting October 14th!

Great rundown, mate. Summoners can bring in any level card, but those cards will only perform at the level the summoner can manage.
Aha! That's how I hoped it would be...
This is the best post I've read on Steem Monsters. THANK YOU!!!!!! I have a question about the Beta Summoners - Do they offer any bonus? I just spent $2 on Jarlax the Undead and he doesn't have any + abilities like Arlic Stormbringer. I'm hoping he brings something to the table.
Thank you & you're welcome.
I can't answer your question. I didn't even realize there were new summoner beta cards. Haha
Do be aware the next couple of months the developers will be looking at actual gameplay to determine if any of the stats need to be tweaked to keep the game well balanced. For instance, if Arlic teams are too powerful they might drop the +1 magic bonus. If you're new guy has weak teams they may add a bonus to him. I think they've already made some changes to the life element because they were so powerful...
Maybe someone who knows more than me will see your question abs answer it.
good luck
maybe we will meet on the battlefield :D
