Iceberg

Desde que inició el calentamiento del planeta, gracias al efecto invernadero, cada vez eran más frecuentes los icebegs que se desprendían desde los gigantescos casquetes de hielo que cubrían ambos polos, esta vez se trataba de una gigantesca isla flotante de unos nueve mil kilómetros cuadrados.

No era el más grande que se había visto en las últimas semanas, pero igual representaba un riesgo para las estructuras de contención que estaban siendo construidas varios miles de kilómetros al oeste en las costas del continente, como una medida de protección para las futuras ciudades que en ellas se construirían.

Héctor observó desde las alturas el gigantesco bloque de hielo, mientras los sensores de la nave determinaban su curso y velocidad. Luego de unos segundos pudo leer en su monitor la información sobre la trayectoria del iceberg.

—Bien, está confirmado, se dirige al noreste del continente, directamente a la zona donde se está construyendo la barrera, me dispongo a cambiar su ruta —dijo, a través de su comunicador —. Voy a desplazarlo hasta encontrar el ramal sur oeste de la corriente y observar que ruta toma después.

—De acuerdo Argos, por favor informe cuando haya concluido el cambio de ruta —escuchó decir a la voz del operador de guardia, en el puesto de control de la estación espacial.

Héctor posicionó la nave sobre la superficie del agua, a algunos cientos de metros del iceberg, activó en su consola el panel de control de emisiones sónicas, bajo la línea de flotación de la nave una compuerta se abrió en el casco y de ella se proyectó una especie de pequeño domo traslucido que contenía un emisor de ondas de sonido de baja frecuencia.

Tras realizar varios cálculos en la consola, Héctor introdujo algunos números al control y activó el dispositivo, el emisor empezó a generar una explosión de ondas sonoras que produjeron una intensa onda de presión, cuyo efecto provocó un gran oleaje que empezó a alterar el rumbo del bloque de hielo.

Después de seguir al Iceberg durante unas cinco horas, manteniendo el continuo bombardeo de ondas sonoras, desactivó el dispositivo y elevó la nave para tener una vista completa y realizar un nuevo cálculo de la trayectoria.

—Control, he concluido el cambio de ruta, según el nuevo rumbo, debería llegar a las costas del sureste del continente en unos veinte días, debe haberse reducido lo suficiente para que no sea de peligro para la barrera en esa zona donde ya está concluida —dijo por su comunicador —. Me retiro y sugiero que, desde la orbita, los satélites monitoreen el rumbo por si hay cambios imprevistos.

—Gracias Argos, lo notificaré a la sección de control ambiental para que hagan el seguimiento —respondió el operador de la estación de control.

Héctor emprendió el viaje de regreso a la estación espacial, donde estaría a espera de un nuevo llamado, mientras siguiera aumentando la temperatura, sus servicios serían requeridos, a menos que se concretará el proyecto de construcción de sondas robóticas, adoptadas para la emisión de ondas de presión. Por suerte para él y los otros pilotos de naves como la Argos, el sindicato había interpuesto una demanda ante el Parlamento, para evitar el desarrollo de este proyecto y así resguardar sus empleos.

Iceberg

Since global warming began, thanks to the greenhouse effect, the icebegs that came off the gigantic ice caps that covered both poles were becoming more and more frequent, this time it was a gigantic floating island of about nine thousand square kilometers.

It was not the largest that had been seen in recent weeks, but it still represented a risk to the containment structures that were being built several thousand kilometers west on the continent's coasts, as a protective measure for the future cities that would be built there.

Hector observed from the heights the gigantic block of ice, while the ship's sensors determined its course and speed. After a few seconds he was able to read on his monitor the information about the iceberg's trajectory.

-Well, it is confirmed, it goes to the northeast of the continent, directly to the area where the barrier is being built, I prepare to change its route," he said, through his communicator. I will move it until I find the south west branch of the current and observe which route it takes next.

-All right Argos, please report when you have completed the change of route -he heard the voice of the guard operator, at the checkpoint of the space station.

Hector positioned the ship on the surface of the water, a few hundred meters from the iceberg, activated the sonic emission control panel on his console, under the ship's waterline a gate was opened in the hull and from it was projected a kind of small translucent dome containing a low frequency sound wave emitter.

After several calculations in the console, Hector introduced some numbers to the control and activated the device, the emitter began to generate an explosion of sound waves that produced an intense pressure wave, whose effect caused a large wave that began to alter the course of the ice block.

After following the Iceberg for about five hours, maintaining the continuous bombardment of sound waves, he deactivated the device and raised the spacecraft to have a complete view and recalculate the trajectory.

-Control, I have concluded the change of route, according to the new course, should reach the coasts of the southeast of the continent in about twenty days, must have been reduced enough so that it is not a danger to the barrier in that area where it is already completed," said his communicator. I withdraw and suggest that, from the orbit, the satellites monitor the course for unforeseen changes.

-Thank you Argos, I will notify the environmental control section for follow-up," replied the operator of the control station.

Hector began the trip back to the space station, where he would be waiting for a new call, as long as the temperature continued to rise, his services would be required, unless the project to build robotic probes, adopted for the emission of pressure waves, is completed. Luckily for him and the other pilots of ships like Argos, the union had filed a lawsuit before Parliament to prevent the development of this project and thus safeguard their jobs.
