*To enable students to.. -  Describe habitual actions in the past. - Communicate about the past using “USED TO” - Recognize the structure ‘used to + infinitive’ to describe a habitual action in the past. - Identify habits that they used to do when they were young.

  • The course Rationale:
This course is designed for elementary school learners in order to improve their vocabulary at the time of talking about the past. It teaches the main aspects needed and also it is going to enable students to recognize the importance to communicate using the habitual past, and also working as a team.
  • Describing entry and exit level
In this lesson students will learn how to describe habitual actions in the past but also how important is to work in groups by the implementation of cooperative learning which is an approach to group work that minimizes the occurrence of those unpleasant situations and maximizes the learning and satisfaction that result from working on a high-performance team in which students are working together for a purpose. At the end of the lesson, students will communicate about the past using the correct structure of “USED TO”. Students will be able to talk about, narrate and describe past events using the preterit appropriately depending on the case, putting the language from the lesson into practice and at the same time students will be able to use the topic vocabulary in the dialogues, monologues, and writing, and recognize it in the literature.
  • Choosing a course content
  • In order to communicate about the past, students must understand when to use the proper tense.
  • Identify habits and feelings that they used to do when they were younger.
  • Complete sentences with ‘used to’ using the correct form of the verb
  • Determining the scope and sequence
Students are going to learn and develop new vocabulary talking about the past * Simple to complex First it is important for students to recognize the basic form for using the correct structure of “USED TO”. *Needs Material: -Photocopies -Many cut outs of some pictures * Prerequisite learning - Past tense - When to use the past tense and how to conjugate the past tense - Vocabulary of products/clothes/ - Some adjectives *Planning the course structure The course is going to be divided into 4 steps or activities which are going to be developed within approximately 20-25 minutes. *Preparing the scope and sequence plan - Warm up activity (2 minutes)
  • Teacher greets students
  • Teacher asks the students to remember some things from their earliest childhood. And Write a few headings on the board such as: food, drink, toys, games, trip and holidays.
- Presentation (3 minutes)
  • Teacher shows some pictures to the class about some products which are not easy to find now.
  • Students look at the pictures and identify them.
  • Teacher asks some questions like: Who used to wear/buy/see this when he/she was young?
  • Teacher writes up some examples on the board and asks the students if they have noticed the structure “used to” given in the examples.
- Practice and production (10-15minutes)
  • Teacher explains to the students that ‘used to’ can be used to refer to habits that people had in the past but do not have now. Highlight to them that ‘used’ is in the simple past tense.
  • Direct the students to photocopy brochure and read the examples to them.
  • Teacher is going to ask to 2 or 3 students to write 1 sentence on the board about what they used to do or buy when they were young.
  • Then teacher divides the class into groups of three. Get them to think of things that they used to play with or used to wear.
  • Students work in groups to discuss each others what they used to do and also the actual situation on the country.
  • Later teacher assigns an activity to each groups and walking around to check their answers.
-Evaluation (5 minutes)
  • Teacher revises the assignments
  • Teacher asks students to reflex on grammar
  • Teacher explains the importance of working together as a team.
