今日は、スパイス戦争のお話しです。
スパイスがもたらした、なんとも悲しい戦争。
昨日、大航海時代を迎えたことで、ヨーロッパでは、スパイスの利用が一般にも普及したところまでお話ししました。

しかし、
ヨーロッパという巨大な組織をもってしても、なかなか手に入らないスパイスがあるのです。

クローブ
ナツメッグ

これらは、手に入る人が限られます（結局、権力やお金持ちのみ？）。
そこで、これらのスパイスを巡って、ヨーロッパ各国で争奪戦が始まり、激化されます。
ヨーロッパだけで収まればよいものが、これらスパイスの産地が犠牲となります。スパイスの産地は、東南アジア。自国でやればよいものを、戦場は、東南アジアとなるわけです。なんとも無様・・いつの日にも犠牲になるのは、関係のない弱いモノです。

スパイスを巡った争いは、

16世紀前半

ポルトガルが東南アジアや交易地を制します。次に、スペインが進出し植民地を獲得。

16世紀後半

イギリスが海賊行為により、ポルトガルやスペインの領海へ進出。イギリス東インド会社を設立し、そこを拠点に勢力拡大をはかります。このイギリスの動きを知ってかた知らずか、オランダもこの海域を狙うのです。

16世紀末

オランダが、モルッカ諸島に進出（現在のインドネシア辺り）。交易を行うことで現地の人に歓迎され、気をよくし、支配の礎を築きました。

その後、オランダは東インド会社を設立、ポルトガルの追い落としにかかり、クローブ貿易の支配権を奪うのですが、そこへイギリスが割り込んだため、

ポルトガル×スペイン×オランダ×イギリス

の4ヵ国
による植民地の争奪戦となります。これがスパイス戦争です。

戦争はオランダが勝利し、モルッカ諸島は、一部を除き18世紀までの間、オランダが制しました。

そんなオランダ政権は、そう長くは続かず(2世紀あまりなので200年ほど)、
突如として今まで参戦しなかったフランスが現れます。しかし、フランスは、戦争を申し出るのではなく、知略をもってスパイスを手に入れることにしました。その知略とは、盗木　（それもどうかと思いますが・・）。
オランダ官憲の目を盗み、クローブやナツメッグの木を盗み、フランス領域のマダガスカル島へ移植したのです。その後、南米や西インド諸島などへ移植を広げました。広い範囲でスパイスが栽培される、すなわち生産されることで、植民地政策は意味が薄れ、スパイス戦争は自然に終わりを迎えました。

フランスが大人な対応？のようにも見えますが、う～ん小賢しいというか。
結局、自国が潤えばよいという考えが透けて見えるのは私だけでしょうか。現代だともう少し平和的解決になるのかな、と思いはしましたが。
戦争のことの発端って、ヨーロッパに限らずしょうもないですよね。日本の乱だって、権力や領土、幼稚な言い方をすれば、「あいつ気に入らない」とかそんな理由（笑）

スパイス戦争と調べると、読み物が何冊が出版されているみたいで、ちょっと面白そうでした。秋の夜長に良いかもしれませんね。
