SCHOOL FOR PARENTS: Your child can help with household chores: look at the ones that are appropriate for each age.

in #steempress5 years ago (edited)

Is it necessary to teach the child to do housework, or can it allow him to remain a child and leave all his free time for games and entertainment? The opinions of parents on this subject are divided. Some say that children should not be overworked, others that children should learn to do housework to grow independently. What kind of responsibilities can be assigned to children at different ages?

How important are domestic chores for children?

Many parents believe that homework is not for children. Of course, children should not do work at home on equal terms with adults, but they need some responsibilities, and this is the reason:

  • Domestic help develops the child's necessary skills in adult life;
  • When a child is assigned to domestic responsibilities, he learns responsibility. You will also learn what it means to learn from your mistakes;
  • The performance of their tasks, even the smallest ones, can be a real achievement for the child and a reason for their pride;
  • Children can use logic and thinking skills to complete the task;
  • Entrusting children with domestic chores will give them time and allow them to rest more;
  • Helping at home, children learn to work as a team. They begin to understand how to divide the work and assign the parts of the task to several people according to their abilities;
  • Children can learn several essential skills for life, such as planning, cooking, washing;
  • When a child is bored, domestic chores help him to spend time with benefit.
Household responsibilities also contribute to the child's diligence, courtesy and honesty. When you assign a task to your child, and expect him to complete it on time, he understands how important punctuality is. When you encourage him for his job, he understands the need to work. The child also learns honesty when he understands the need to prove that the job is done and then receive a reward.

Children of different ages can not do the same tasks equally well. This must be taken into account when entrusting the child with any domestic chores.

1. Children from 2 to 3 years of age perform the assigned work with enthusiasm. They can be given simple instructions, but before that it is necessary to demonstrate how to carry them out. The following instructions can be given to the child:

  • Collect toys this is the easiest for the child. You just need to take a toy off the floor and put it in a box. All you have to do is show the child how to do it;
  • Pulling the diaper this task will also be easy for the child. Teach your child that he should throw the diaper in the trash can and that toys can not be thrown there.
  • A three-year-old child can also be taught to dust off. Show him once how this is done, and in the future he will take care of that work on his own.
Young children can help make the bed, for example, straighten the sheets and put pillows.

2. Children from 4 to 5 years old already have more skills. They are as willing as younger children to help their parents. They are beginning to like group classes, which means they will be more willing to help their parents than to do something for themselves.

  • Children at this age can order their toys and put them in different boxes. Teach your child to do it every day, and you will understand the important rule: everything must be in its place;
  • Children can help you set the table. But even so they should be given simple instructions: dispose dishes, cutlery, etc. It is still too early for a 4-5 year old child to transfer hot foods or drinks;
  • When the child learns to set the table, you can also ask him to remove the dishes from the table after a meal and put them in the sink. Teaching a child to use a dishwasher at that age is not worth it;
  • The baby can sort the white and colored clothes before washing it. You can even help him put the clothes in the washing machine, but he still can not control the washing machine. Therefore, you need to be close;
  • A child at this age can be taught to put books on the shelf. Children from 4 to 5 years old still can not do a full cleaning in the room, but they can clean the bookshelf.
At this age, you must constantly develop the child's abilities one at a time. Do not expect a child of complete independence, that's why he is still too small.

3. At the age of 6-7 years, children are more independent and can simply take care of themselves, performing small household tasks safely and effectively:

  • It is difficult for younger children to carry things, but between 6 and 7 years old, children can already do this. You can ask your child to transfer groceries from the car to the house or on the way home from the store. However, remember that the child is still small and should not be loaded with heavy objects;
  • When the child is 6 years old, teach him how to make the bed in the morning. You can even help with this younger brother or sister;
  • Folding clothes is harder than classifying them. At the age of 7 years, children develop a coordination and an eye, so they can already fold the clothes;
  • The child can easily follow the instructions to feed the pets, because he already understands the amount of food he needs to fill. The child must be clearly instructed before giving such an order;
  • A child of 6 to 7 years of age can easily pick up newspapers and other mails from the mailbox;
  • At the age of 6 years, the child still can not handle the dishwasher, but can already be assigned to remove the dishes, clean them. However, the child must be watched if he has porcelain or glass objects in his hands;
  • A boy of seven years can already wash the dishes in the sink. You can teach him to throw the food waste in the trash can, as well as to use a sponge and detergent;
  • At this age, the child still can not wash clothes independently, but can help you with this;
  • The child can water the plants.
  • At first glance, it may seem that children at this age can not help, and the tasks assigned to them are trivial. However, for the children themselves this is a great achievement.
Remember that children will soon enter adolescence. Be prepared for the fact that teenagers are trying to do everything they want.

4. Children from 8 to 12 years of age tend to spend more time with their peers than in housework. But at the same time, it is the age at which they learn to cooperate, seek the approval of adults and easily accept new challenges. They become more independent and ready to perform several tasks simultaneously.

  • Older children can be used for the responsibility of their belongings. For example, if a child has a bicycle, he should take care of it: wash it, repair it, etc .;
  • Older children usually do not like to do a job as simple as, for example, taking out the trash. This task is better suited to teenagers because they are already strong enough to carry heavy things;
  • You can charge a child from 8 to 12 years not only for feeding pets, but also for walking, bathing and taking care of them.
  • The child can also vacuum the apartment. This is an easy task for teenagers. Also, it is not necessary to do it every day;
  • Older children can face a task like cleaning floors, but this requires their strength and resistance;
  • Cooking simple meals is an important skill for teenagers. Children should be able to make a sandwich, fry eggs, etc. However, the child must be monitored during cooking to ensure their safety.
As children grow, they become more effective and independent in doing their homework.

How to motivate a child to perform their tasks.

The only way to make a child do the housework is to make it look as little as possible work. You can also give the child a small reward. It is advisable to motivate the child to fulfill his / her duties:

Source

  • Explains clearly what the child should do. Give clear and simple tasks that are easy to complete;
  • Praise your child regularly for diligent housework; support the child and offer help if necessary;
  • Develop a special reward system. At the end of the month, the child can receive a reward in cash, a treat or other reward. However, the development of skills should always come first, not the material rewards;
  • Make a schedule for the child. This will help you fulfill your responsibilities on time and follow this process;
  • Do different household chores for the child. If he reluctantly removes the trash, invite him to cook or shop at the store;
Do not give your child too many responsibilities in a row. Divide them into several categories and distribute them throughout the week. Therefore, the child will feel less busy and can perform all homework on time.
As already mentioned, housework is necessary to teach the child the basic skills that will be useful in adulthood. The development of these skills will give the child confidence in adulthood.
