in #steempress6 years ago (edited)

Most teachers have faced similar problems: usually children, do not listen to lessons, do what they like and almost do not control themselves. Nowadays, these children are called hyperactive. Symptoms of ADHD, When do the symptoms of ADHD appear?, Is it a personality disorder?, How can parents and teachers improve children's school life?

Symptoms of ADHD

The disease in children progresses differently, but each one has a lack of attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Source
✰ Lack of attention

It is characterized by the inability or difficulty to concentrate on a subject. Children begin to get bored when they have to do something for a long time. Consciously focusing on something causes considerable difficulty ...

✰ Hyperactivity

Children can not sit still. They are constantly in motion and talk about something all the time. It is very easy to find such a child in the classroom: shake at the desk, shake the leg, hit the table with a pen or walk through the office.

✰ Impulsiveness

It seems that before doing something, the child does not think at all. The first thing that comes to mind answers the question. They can make an inappropriate comment or leave the road, before this without looking to the right or to the left.

When do the symptoms of ADHD appear?

It is believed that this occurs before seven years, although sometimes they may appear for the first time in ten or eleven years. Most of the time, parents of first graders turn to their doctor: "Everyone is sitting quietly, but mine can not!" However, some clarify: "In general, with him it was very difficult since his birth."

In general, attention and activity are the properties of temperament, and in this sense, all people are divided into those that can remain focused for a long time, can do hard work and those that can not support that work.

The diagnosis of ADHD means that these properties of temperament are extremely defined, so that a person can not fit into a normal life, unable to perform the tasks that others and he puts, and this greatly hinders full relationships with parents and friends .

Now, often, any impulsive, restless, talkative child is called hyperactive. However, only a doctor can diagnose ADHD. At first glance, it is impossible to determine if a child has ADHD or has just had a tantrum. To make a diagnosis, it is necessary to carefully evaluate the life and development of the child, to track how and in what situations their attention and activity problems are manifested.

Is it a personality disorder?

The first thing parents should know: ADHD is not a mental illness, but a developmental disorder. It's just that the child's function of self-control was broken initially. Most of the time, he does not get sick with this, he was born that way.

Parents often ask: "Did we overlook it somewhere, did not we do something on time?" No Parents are not to blame. If we could see such a child in the brain, we would see that those areas that are responsible for self-control, behavior control, work differently for him than for others.

The paradox is that these children look completely normal. Here he asks for forgiveness and promises to correct himself, but again and again his promises are broken, and they begin to consider that he is acting badly. Children with ADHD forget the rules and behave on impulse. Parents who know it, it's easier to forgive a child like that, they do not put all kinds of labels on it and, I hope, they do not blame themselves for anything.

There may be several reasons for ADHD. For example, the inheritance. Research suggests that approximately half of children with this diagnosis have at least one of their parents who also have ADHD. It is also known that in children with low birth weight, ADHD often develops immediately after birth.

Unfortunately, there is no way to cure ADHD once and for all. But the development of the child depends to a large extent on the behavior of the parents. Understanding the problem, they can make your life much easier.

How can parents and teachers improve children's school life?

The most effective thing you can do, to help a child with ADHD, is to create an external control system for him.

  • Children with ADHD have difficulty maintaining a large amount of information in their head. This means that the tasks for them must be divided into parts.

    Source

  • It is known that children with ADHD have great problems with the sense of time. If we can plan our activities and imagine what will take us, children with ADHD have a "window in time": ten minutes at most. This type of children live only at the moment, they do not represent consequences. Therefore, if as a result of his actions, "something is not right", it is not his choice, he did not want these consequences.
  • The "rewards" system works well with these children. The child receives rewards in the form of points or tokens, which he then exchanges for something, for carrying out his daily activities. Then he constantly sees the results of his actions, realizes that his opportunities increase with each moment and with each case.

    Source

  • The use of timers. They help children who have problems with the sense of time to follow it. You can use the usual hourglass. There is one more beautiful thing: the clock, which has a circle of color in the sphere, and with the minutes that pass this circle disappears. In this "live" clock you can see how time goes by. After all, the child himself does not feel that it ends, and that is why he postpones the work.

    Source

  • When visiting public places, for example, in an outpatient clinic, you should think in advance what the child will do for one or two hours, especially if the mother is busy. Stock up on paper, markers and toys. It will not be out of place to take a family member to help you.

    Source

Unfortunately, adults do not understand or handle this type of information, and end up reacting reactive: and put the child in a situation in which it is more likely to start having problems and then reprimand.
