Continuing with the topics studied on metacognition, here we will study the strategies for writing texts.

Example: using the written composition strategy

In this example, three fundamental processes stand out: planning, transcription and revision. The training in reflection and knowledge about these processes and their application, conscious on the part of the student (metacognition) will improve the skills of written expression.

1 Planning:

It is the process by which writers form a mental representation of the information that will contain the text. It is divided into three subprocesses: goal establishments, idea generation and idea organization.

a) Setting objectives consists in developing the objectives that will guide the composition process. Three objectives can be distinguished:

  • Avoid making mistakes.
  • Associative writing
  • Communicate a meaning.
b) The generation of ideas consists of the long-term memory of information related to the subject. Immature immature writers lack an optimal strategy to perform that search, without knowing the available information. An appropriate strategy to remedy this problem is to question yourself.

c) Organization of ideas. This sub-process responsible for giving structure to the information that will then lead to the text. In order to elaborate this structure, the objectives and the characteristics of the text, in addition to the information, are taken into account.

This is a step of maximum importance since it is responsible for separating the main ideas from the secondary ones, elaborating arguments to the judgments raised, looking for examples or generating new ideas. In summary, it is the one that brings coherence to the text.

2. This process is translation or transcription, which is responsible for the generation of texts in itself. It consists in moving from a hierarchical semantic organization (in the mind) to a linear organization (in paper). It assumes that the representation in the working memory applies to him written language rules. The structure of the texts intervenes in a special way in this translation process.

3. The review, on the other hand, has two subprocesses: evaluation and revision. It consists of the possibility of suffering problems during the process or the end of the printing, and executes the necessary activities to improve the text.
